have you been to Sunset Park?
take the bus a few blocks up Fifth Ave to Brooklyn's Mexican nabe!
groceries/restaurants on Fifth and Fourth Aves, 40s and 50s

So I heard! Any specific shop that you like?

No specific recs for anything other than tamales and tacos: I go to 46th and Fifth, red awning "Ricos" for tamales, and Tacos Matamoros for tacos (44th or 45th, Fifth Ave)

Groceries are a perpetual graze - good selection of pretty fresh dried chiles at one grocery in the mid-50s, but it wasn't any different from a dozen other spots on that strip. I've seen some larger places passing by 4th Ave, with lots of produce out front, but I haven't been in...

So, my experience is totally random and without documentation . . . and I still have supplies left over from a Mexico trip so I'm not looking tooooo hard.

I'm guessing you're new, and probably from California
    :D
once it gets warm, check out the Red Hook ballfields

none of that answers your Tapatia question, sorry! Now I'll keep my eyes out, cause I don't know that particular item
Kitchen/Market in Chelsea (8th Ave) carries a bunch of specialty groceries - you could call them...

There's a little mexican grocery just off of 5th ave in the 12th-14th st area. I'm fairly certain it's 13th st but I could be off by a block. It's just off of 5th, btwn 4th and 5th aves on the north side of the street. I think it's right next to the NorthFork bank that is being renovated.

I don't know if they have Tapatia but if you're in that area you can pop in and check.

forgive me if i sound stupid but what is tapatia salsa and what is so great about it?

Take a stroll down 5th Ave, anywhere between 23rd St and 9th. Pick of the lot.

We like Guerro (sp?) on 23rd and 5th. You can also try National Supermarket on 4th Ave & 25th St. That's where I buy my hot sauce ;)

And I agree with pitu, a walk above 35th St. on 5th Ave. into SSP is another good bet.

if you find places, please report back or start a new thread on this Board :)

Indeed, I am from California, but not really new. I'm a returnee to South slope/Greenwood Hghts, I'm right on the border so I get the best of both worlds here!

I will check out the Kitchen/Market on 8th Avenue. I work on 19th and 6th. Is it close to there?

Of course, I think it's Uncle Tapa, not Aunt Tapa (TapaTio?). I do know that it's goooodd!

Ok, I'm heading uptown this weekend! I did order some online, but it would be good to find a good grocery and skip the shipping fees.

Got it! Thank you! If they don't have it, perhaps I will beg them!

I didn't get uptown last weekend, but I did go by NorthFork during the week. The store between Northfork and the pet store is empty. I suspect that was the mexican grocer. In the meantime, I ordered a bottle of Tapatio on the web...

Ok, here is my update. I found

A 99 cent 5 oz bottle of TapaTio at Guerrero Food Center on the corner of 23rd and 5th. Same bottle for 1.29 at Rosalinos (34th & 5th) and lots of bagged spices. Best find was Pueblo Min-Market at 39th St where (for us serious hot sauce lovers) you can buy a 32 oz bottle for 2.99.

After exploring the local grocery stores, we stopped of at De Guerrero Food Center Taueria for some pretty dull and almost disgusting tacos and a truly horrible quesadilla. Don't go there.

Bleeech! De Guerrero Food Center, no way.

Taqueria DF on 22nd and 5th. Cal-Mex, but darn tasty! Fav place. Pedro and Tony (owners) are the best!

Consistently excellent. Never had a bad meal there...eat in or delivery.

what do you guys recommend at DF? i went there last week with hubby for the first time, and we found our meals to be utterly mediocre. perhaps we ordered the wrong items -- what do you order when you go there?

    Burrittos. What did you have?

that's what we had. we found them to be extremely bland, and both were glued together with this creamy/cheesy sauce (hard to describe, really) that i thought was uninspiring.

the folks there were very friendly, though -- i feel bad in a way, in the sense that i doubt i'll ever patronize them again but i liked the folks that work there.

    Enfrijoladas! mmmm yum!

This is my new favorite there. I still go with the burrito for take-out because if I allowed myself to pick up the enfrijoladas and bring it home I'd eat it once a week.

The burritos can be hit or miss. It seems every time I take someone there for the first time, bragging about the food, something is lacking. I wonder if the better cook only works certain days or something. Regardless, it's still one of the better choices in GWH for food.

Bingo! If one of the brothers is not in the kitchen (which is rare) you may have a bland meal.

I stick to a cactus burrito, pinto beens, grilled shrimp, brown rice and whole wheat tortilla...

One of the owners used to run Healthy Henrietta's in Bklyn Hts. back in the day.

Will be ordering from them Wed. nite! :)

Aaahhhh, maybe that was the problem. seriously, the food was really bland, which confused the heck out of me since i've heard such good things about the place from Brooklynian members. perhaps it is worth a second try after all!

Had D.F. last night. Co-owner Tony hung out for a few minute to chat...

Great food! :) (our fav post-CB7 order in)

Back on track on this thread, I cannot believe how small the bottle of Tapatia at National Supermarket are!

And I recommended the place, I think.

Much better list of places generated by this thread.

    Thanks!

Found Tapatia at the "new" "super" market on 17th and 5th. Went in there, walked around, it's not so bad at all.

Cost: 1.79 - forgot to check the size of the bottle. That would be outrageous for 10 oz.

I still wouldn't buy meat there.

I think we ought to split part of this thread off to "what's the size of your bottle?"

    ;)

A poll, perhaps? In ounces? Or gross size
