Big accident on Berkeley + 8th this morning

There were helicopters hovering over North Slope this morning at about 7-8am. Couldn't tell what was up until I was walking to GrAP and came upon this scene:

Looked like a pretty significant accident: The SUV was on a tow truck and had its doors wrenched off, the minivan looked like it was parked on the street and had its entire back side smashed in. The SUV didn't have any airbags deployed, so I don't think it was the cause of the accident. i wonder if it was a major hit and run.

Anyone have any news?

I heard the accident and rescue response, then saw the suv flipped on its side with a baby stroller spilled out onto the sidewalk. Someone nearby told me that no one was hurt.

I wish people didn't drive so fast and so recklessly. So many good people die needlessly because of the way people drive.

Now - anyone know what happened?

Agreed. In less than a minute you can change your life (or end it) forever.

Ok.. anyone familiar with this post isn't going to believe this --- but walking to work this morning on Berkely and 8th (the exact time and place I saw the results of the first accident) I see some broken red tailight glass... I look over and see a mini copper that has obviously been re-ended at a decent speed (two broken tailights, dented bumper, etc..)...

Perhaps there is something going on at that corner.... a quick changing light, poor traffic management causing drivers to speed to catch a light before they hit flatbush... who knows.... Two weeks, two accidents, same spot... I'm going to watch out over there that is for sure.

Oh, there was no blood on the ground this time.. :)

DG - I noticed the exact same thing this morning. No car present and I had to do a double take to be sure it wasn't just the same debris from last week's accident (which is still piled in the gutter). I agree - something seems to be up at that intersection...

My car got wrecked in an accident at 8th & President, where I had left it parked for a few days. Imagine my surprise when I went to move my car only to find that the entire passenger side had been all smashed up.

The intersection of 8th & Union seems to be a relatively dangerous intersection, perhaps the general crappiness of it causes accidents in the general vicinity.

Daniel - when did that accident happen? I called 911 a few weeks ago after a car ran a red light and hit the light pole, another occupied car, and a parked car. Caused quite a screaming match between the drivers of the two cars...

Ah - just remembered that was 8th + Carroll. Seems like 8th is indeed a very accident-prone street lately.

It was on March 26th. The car (gray Toyota Matrix) was on 8th, btwn President and Carrol. The truck (I think it was a truck) that his my car also hit a car with a driver in it, so the police were called and an accident report was filled out. A witness left a note on my windshield, as did the other driver.

Thankfully, my insurance has covered everything, except my 500$ deductible, which they are currently trying to get reimbursed for me.

I used to drive from Boro Park to PH along 8th Ave every morning. I think one of the problems - at least for me was - there is a school on I think 13th and 8th which causes a lot of congestion between the parents triple parking and the school buses. Then you get to 8th and I think 6th and same thing with the Catholic school which, coupled with the hospital, would bring the traffic to a standstill and I would notice how the drivers would be so frustrated that when they finally did pass all that traffic they tried to make up time by doubling their speed, I had many close calls from 2nd Street to Union.
