Affordable weddings in the Slope

Hello,
My fiance and I are getting married next year. We live in PS as does our families and we would like to have a small wedding here. I checked out the prices for venues at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Prospect Park and well, they are WAY out of our budget. Any suggestions on how/where to have a nice wedding for 50 people for under 6k? Thanks!

When we got married, going on 6 years ago now, we had the wedding and reception at Moran's in Chelsea. We had a similar tight budget but I can't remembert what the exact figures were.

To hold costs down we had a Sunday lunch/brunch, the meal was a sit down, not a buffet which was more expensive. we only did an open bar for the cocktail hour and cash bar for the meal but with unlimited beer and wine. Having it at a restaurant instead of a "venue" saved a bunch

Tom the banquet manager was great to deal with and was happy to work within our budget. http://www.moranschelsea.com/

"We make your dreams come true" - I'm sure the place is gorgeous but the ad for this place annoys the hell out of me...

My friends had their commitment ceremony at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. It's on PPW and 2nd, I think, and has that lovely outdoor space. I have no idea what they paid, though. Here's the website:

Trust me.. get past the ad for the Grand Prospect hall. The Halkias family will work with you as far as budget and the place is gorgeous... They are fair people.. Don't eleiminate this based on that obnoxious ad!!

veets - When my sister got married there (long long time ago) it was superb and I became a big fan of theirs until I went to two functions there this past year. Both times the food was terrible and the last time not only was the food bad but it was about 15 degrees outside and they did not put the heat on. I will say that the place is beautiful and was very clean.

Stacey.. I will take your word for it..that the Grand Prospect Hall has fallen.. I haven't attended anything there in a long time either.. my experiences in the long ago were good though.
The banquet manager will let you peek in on weddings and sample food and such so you could get an idea of what the possibilities are.
I agree the advertising for this place verges on ridiculous to obnoxious.

I had friends who did it SUPER unique and completely fun... They had their ceremony in the Gardens for really cheap... Then, they approached the restaurant, LONG TAN and had the reception there... Fully catered, DJ, bar etc... One of the most unique and awesome weddings I've been to. If Long Tan isn't your thing, I'm sure there's somewhere that would be into it.

It's not the Slope, but if you are going to do it in the warmer months, Frankies 457 in Carroll Gardens has a great space out in the back.

BTW I got married at Moran's and agree it is a great place, Tom the manager is fantastic.

I thought I recalled someone posting here that you can have just your ceremony at the gardens for small groups without all the catering, etc. I think you had to do it early in the morning (before 10am??) but that the price was significantly less than the full shmuhgiggy.

First off, "shmuhgiggy" is one of the best words I've seen/heard lately.

And yes, you can do the BBG before 10am for cheap(er), but I don't think they let you have chairs......which is nice for a short civil ceremony.

I'd much rather have a small wedding than have a cash bar. No offense, BJ, but I just don't think guests should have to buy drinks at a wedding. I recognize that weddings are expensive, but I'd rather have a barbeque at a friend's house and coolers of beer if that's all my budget allowed

I understand not wanting people to pay for their own drinks. We didn't make them. We only had unlimited beer and wine during lunch and we paidl for the 6 or 7 drinks that people had. Booze is probably the number one most expensive thing you will pay for. For the 5 hours we had the venue, 4 were with booze and at $10 per hour per person it ads up. But you have to know your guests.

get married in dumbo in brooklyn bridge park - $25 will get you a permit and your photos with the skyline in the background will be fantastic (trust me, that's what we did). then we had a dinner for 40 at grotta azzurra wine cellar in little italy - it was private and the dinner was about $85/person, excluding tax/tip. i know the restaurant isn't brooklyn, but the food was yummy. like another poster said, maybe try frankies 457 afterwards?

Somebody else said Frankie's on Court St.; I got married at the Unitarian Church in Brooklyn Heights and had my reception at Frankie's. No rental fee, just incredible food and drink for under $100 pp (in 2005). They have a backyard with a stable for dancing. For under 60 people, it was perfect.
