9:00 A.M. ›› Honoring the Forgotten:
Remembering Our Civil War Soldiers

Directly inside Green-Wood Cemetery’s main entrance, 1,000 newly obtained Veterans Administration gravestones for our Civil War veterans who have been in unmarked graves for more than a century will be laid out. A parade to the Civil War Soldiers’ Lot will begin promptly at 9:00 AM at the main entrance and will be led by uniformed Civil War re-enactors, the Fife and Drum Band of the 119th New York Infantry, an Armed Services color guard, historians, and Civil War descendants from all over the country. At the Soldiers’ Lot, the names of our veterans will be read and their memory will be honored with live singing and music as well as the salutes of an artillery battery.

Autographed copies of the new book by Green-Wood Cemetery historian Jeff Richman, Final Camping Ground: Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery’s Civil War Veterans, in Their Own Words, and an accompanying illustrated biographical dictionary on CD of the almost 3,000 Civil War veterans who have been discovered at Green-Wood, will be available for sale for the first time at this event.

2:00 P.M. ›› 9TH Annual Memorial Day Concert

This concert will showcase the music of the Band of Long Island, directed by Michael Flamhaft, featuring select compositions by Green-Wood Cemetery’s permanent residents Fred Ebb, Leonard Bernstein, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Claudio Grafulla, and Paul Jabara. Bring a folding chair, a blanket, and a picnic lunch. Cookout food, snacks, and drinks, as well as books and souvenirs relating to the history of the cemetery, will be for sale.

Join us to celebrate and remember those who served America.
