Hi all,

Anybody have any ideas about how to stop the squirrels from digging up my garden? They seem to enjoy eating my bulbs. I am affraid of what they will do to my tomatos.

Thank you.

Short of shooting them try spreading cayenne pepper powder over the dirt. You can buy it in bulk at a Pathmark or one of the Carribean places on Flatbush. Or mix the powder with water and pump spray it on the dirt and plants.

I used to plant tomatoes and the squirrels weren't interested, so maybe you'll be okay. Just don't plant tulips; it's hopeless. I've had pretty good luck with lilies.

The stuff they don't want to eat still gets dug up for sport.

I get a roll of aluminum gutter guard and cut it into strips and stick it in the soil -- the sharp edges keep them away, sometimes.
Yes, I'm putting the equiv of razor wire in my minty window box.

If the squirrels don't eat the tomatoes the birds will. Get chicken wire or that green plastic mesh you use for goofers: create domes.
    Worked once for me.

Squirrels used to eat my tulips and also dig some up and bury them someplace else. It didn't really bother me - squirrels gotta eat, and I found it interesting to see which tulips came back and where they'd be. But then I have a naturalist approach to gardening.
