Burning Smell

I'm in North Slope (1st St) and something smells really strongly like it's burning outside, kind of chemically, like a bad perm...anyone know what's up?

That smell comes around every so often. I'm almost afraid to know what exactly it is.

Is it the burnt coffee smell of the Gillies roasters in Gowanus?
I smelled a strong wood burning odor a couple of hours ago this am...

For now, it shall remain a mystery. A stinky, creepy mystery.

could be bad wiring, someone doing a donut, bums burning wire for copper etc....

It smells like burnt something, not exactly coffee... I always assumed it was some sort of toxic industrial by-product that escaped into the air every month or so. I would be overjoyed if it turns out to be completely harmless.

There's an electrical line around 7th and Garfield that keeps acting up. Maybe it's burning again.

Ah ha! So I'm not crazy! I was going around my house smelling for something burning two days ago and couldn't find the source. It was driving me bonkers. So maybe the smell was from *outside*. What I was smelling reminded me of burning hair but it wasn't that. I also thought it smelled like a motor burning out at one point.

NY is known for it's unknown smells. The pancake syrup smell is my fave. The natural gas one a few months ago was creepy, but it seems like there is always a natural gas smell somewhere.
