Struck in head by girls Sat 5/19 4pm

All-- new to posting here--but felt compelled to share my recent assault story with you--

Saturday afternoon on St. John's---between Washington and Classon right in front of the firehouse basically, around 4pm, I was blindsided. Struck in the head, by what I do not know. I was stunned. Literally. Kind of thought I'd been hit by a baseball or a brick--some sort of projectile. When I got my head around and followed the sounds of commotion and footsteps--I saw three or four young girls (black, maybe 15 -20..hard to say exactly--two were already across the street, one was running across the street, looking back at me--and I was already in shock). The one who was probably responsible for the attack was wearing a brightly colored wrap of some sort on her head..she seemed the most pleased with herself and was the closest to me. The girls ran into the courtyard across the street and were gone. By the time I got to the courtyard (and I wasn't exactly running to get there) there was no sign of them.

Anyway--I'm not sure that I could identify the girls---although I have a feeling now that I might if I see them soon. And I might. I am always at that location.

My instincts are that this attack was racially motivated, though I imagine it also could have been a mindless teenage stunt..simply a predatory act on any unsuspecting passerby. (Though they didn't attack the black woman across the street who witnessed the incident and told me "I don't know why they did that." In retrospect, I should have asked her what she had seen, but I was too freaked out to think clearly.)

I thought I'd put the word out there, as I just read about a similar incident on this site.

and, like others have said, I'm glad you are safe and weren't seriously harmed. sounds like a very scary experience.

Oh, these girls don't exactly have a bright future in store...

Glad you're OK. This is such a dangerous pattern that's developing. So what does this mean for the summer when all of the kids will be out and about??
No one can walk safely, even in the daylight? And they're chosing women and hitting from behind, which can't be much more cowardly.
Luckily, the poor attacked women haven't had permanent physical damage. But hitting in the head with heavy objects will hurt someone badly soon. And it keeps getting closer and closer to my family members home.

Similar thing happened to me - one week ago tomorrow. (Someone posted the link to the thread).

I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt (sounds like it hurt, but you're OK for the most part).

This is getting really out of control. I would do anything in my power to help fight this situation.

Would it help to have a Website (other than the forum) that strictly acts as a public record of each attack, (at least those who report it to the forums or otherwise).

The only thing that worries me is - if this kids are aware of it they might try to get on it, hence more attacks.

I just had a long talk with a guy, Detective Pierre-Louis, at the Community Affairs office at the 77. I mentioned some of these situations to him and he is keeping an eye out on cases with that pattern for me, but its not looking like it has been reported very often. SO... Flo, if you are still reading, please consider filing a police report. Until some sort of pattern emerges, theres not going to be much that can be done.

Det. Pierre-Louis also mentioned that there is a meeting tonight at the 77 at 7pm that people can attend to bring up some of these concerns. Given I am currently out of town, I can't make it, but I would encourage people to go and make sure this gets some attention.

I posted my story because I had read yours and wanted to share. The girls who attacked me seemed a little older than 12--I would have guessed them somewhere from 15 to 22. Thanks for the well wishes. I am ok. Jaw's a little swollen--bone bruise I guess.. and I'm a little preoccupied with knowing what happened---hard to get used to the idea that I probably won't ever know what I was hit with. But I'll survive.

Flo, I'm sorry this topic got so derailed, and even sorrier to hear you were assaulted.

It IS important that police reports get filed about this kind of thing, because that's the only thing that forces them to pay attention and be able to track trends. Unfortunately, the city's pretty invested in making it look like crime is way down so stories of cops discouraging victims from filing reports are sadly pretty common. I really encourage you to file a police report (and that you insist on doing so if the police try to discourage you). Let us know what happens, and good luck!

Yes, Flo, file a police report not because the police will actually catch the perps, but it will at least possibly raise the crime statistics which police captains have beeen trying to keep artificially low for years.

I figured that Flo's wanting the people who randomly clocked her upside the head to be caught, as well as my own wish for the same, went without saying. But people don't always know the additional reasons they should file a report.

Perhaps she doesn't want them to be caught so that there isn't any retalitation from the ghetto kids relatives.

Just like what happened to Mohammed, you do something/say something to one kid and next thing their whole posse is in your store beating your ass down.

Where exactly was it? As an aside, what's up with the construction stuff all over the N side near Underhill? It makes it pitch black over there at night. And it's also really dark heading through the big trees on the other side near Washington.

seriously. that's the only part about walking back from underhill to washington that really wigs me out. I hate that I can't see around the corner of that last building before the grassy alley behind the storefronts on washington. what city agency do you think can be contacted re: trimming that damn tree? maybe I'll just call 311.

The blood is under the construction stuff on St. Johns place...There's a trail of it going towards Underhill. Not sure if its still there, but it was on Friday. I feel really bad for whomever was attacked. "What's going on?" is an absurd question. People are angry and are finally starting to lash out about the inequality of wealth in the neighborhood. I had a long conversation with someone who told me about the attack. He specifically said it was a group of younger people...And he's about 30. I asked him to talk to the attackers but he seemed quite nonchalant abotu the whole thing. His thinking was, "They'll grow out of it." He told me he was once a stick-up kid, even went to jail for it, BUT, look...he turned out okay...

Uh wow. This really blows that you have to be mindful about the possibility of kids trying to beat you up for no apparent reason and at any time of the day.

To be honest, I have only lived in the neighborhood for about 6 months... but I have really felt some comfort in the diversity of the neighborhood and the general pleasant attitude from most of my neighbors... especially coming from a place like Philadelphia, where I experienced a lot of racism and a huge income difference within neighborhoods. It saddens me to think that I should be more on my toes than I have been.

If this is about inequality, what about the rich black girl who moved in next to section 8 housing? "What's going on?" is that teenagers are reliably the dumbest form of life on the planet. These kids have legitimate problems, but no legitimate grievances with the people they're targeting, so let's not elevate this to the level of social struggle.

Pretty much all gang related. I used to teach Middle School in that area, the kids bring guns to school, and always have box cutters and blades on them. The younger ones in particular are all about getting jumped into gangs. Remember that one of the young girls who was involved in that actress's slaying in the LES a few years ago was a 6th grader at the school I taught at.

You need to be careful.

Where are the parents? in jail, on the streets, in other countries, working late hours or night shifts, or in gangs themselves.

In RBG's worldview, there was no crime in Prospect Heights before gentrification, and it's inconceivable that poor people might rob/assault other poor people, since all crime is triggered by social inequality and class struggle. :roll:
