Mugging on Eastern Pkwy. between Classon and Franklin.

I saw a woman get her purse snatched at about midnight(40 min. ago).

It was horrible-two guys on bikes rode up to her while she was getting out of her car and one rode off with her purse. She ran after him screaming...

You know I was born and raised here and I have to say that as of the past few months, I've been noticing a vibe that isn't so savory.... Has anyone else who knows this neighborhood been feeling this way? It feels like there are a lot of hoods lurking around, hanging out and up to no good....

I haven't had any trouble. But then I haven't been out past ten or eleven in several weeks. Ack. Sorry to hear about the purse snatching, hopefully it is isolated. </pollyanna>

Two friends of my son were beaten by a gang of about five guys on Nostrand Ave. near St. Johns Pl. at about midnight. No money was taken but one guy lost his expensive glasses. He's legally blind and he's a foster kid, so getting new glasses is a real hassle.

Similarly, two guys punched my 18 year old son in the back of the head around 11:30 PM on EPW about two months ago.

In both cases attempts to contact the police were unsuccessful. In the Nostrand Ave. situation, the guys approached a police car parked nearby on Nostrand, but when they couldn't recall the address of the house they had come from, the cops just ignored them.

Yes, I do think there is a new vibe in the air.

Next time call 911 so that the call is logged. Once its logged if you don't like the service you can make a complaint. They know who was sent out on that particular call.

there is defintly a new vibe in the air, i have noticed an increase of shady people in the area. On the corner of Prospect and Classon across from the bodega, are a couple of shady guys hanging out all the time. If the old timers to the neighborhood have been commenting on it, alot recently. What can we do?

I'm not an old-timer, but it feels different to me too - but that is enhanced by the bright lights that have been shining on Nostrand a lot lately. That increases a sense of tension and apprehension. Were the bright lights out when your son's friends were beat up the other night? If they didn't stop the beating, I am not sure what they are doing.

i got sucker punched and jumped by about 12 guys dressed in red at rogers and e. pkwy while walking back from library around 5pm. though rare, police caught them in the act, they scattered, and i was spared. neighbors didn't believe me at first, till they saw the stitches. days before the action i sensed a dark vibe in the air. also, what's the deal with the spotlights at nostrand and park?

Ack. I walked to Nostrand and St. Johns last night from Eastern and Franklin, about 1am or so. Didn't run into anything other than the some kids hanging out, nicely. It is pretty upsetting to hear about stuff like this.

The lights have been moving up and down Nostrand the last few weeks. They turn them on overnight on weekends, and some weeknights to really like up the place. They have also had the "crow's nest" thingy with all the cameras on it in the neighborhood lately.

What? In case we didn't hear it the first time???

That sucks. It should be safe to walk the streets. I will have to be more careful.

Why is a foster kid out on the corner of Nostrand and St Johns at midnight? Or any kid for that matter.

Not that he doesn't have every right to be there.

And let me add that I live near that corner and pass it multiple times daily, there definitely are groups of young men hanging out there from time to time, but I have yet to have any problem with them.

You've gotta make the police take a report. That is a load of crap. Don't take NO for an answer.

There seems to be double posting going on in other threads too. Maybe its a glitch in the system.

It sounds to me like the gangs are taking over our neighborhood. The DA's office has a community specialist and she was instrumental in helping me and some others with our problem. Contact Ms. Adossa at 718-250-3370 and she can get you in touch with the right people. I would also make the commanding office Dep. Ins. Cosgrove aware of the problem.
