Couple seeks rental in Prospect Heights

My fiancee and I are seeking a 1-bedroom or 1+ in Prospect Heights (west of Washington Ave.) We are a responsible, respectful, professional couple in our 30s with $95K/year income, excellent credit, and references.
Max price: $1700 (less would be even better!).
We're ideally looking for Aug. 1 but would consider July 15 if the place was right.

Are these requests ever successful? I never understand the "Hey, I want an apartment" notices. Isn't getting an apartment some active, not passive?
