Local Computer supplies?

First, the disclaimer: I spent a long night wrestling with my new computer; after five hours trying to get it to connect to the Internet, I finally learned that it had come preinstalled with an anti-virus firewall program that was so strong it was effectively blocking me from accessing THE WHOLE ENTIRE INTERNET, and possibly THE ENTIRE WORLD PERIOD. So just warning folks to be gentle and use small words when responding ("fire bad, tree pretty, Bill Gates evil").

Anyway.

I just need to pick up a specific kind of cable now to connect my old computer to my new and transfer some files (the instructions said I needed either a "null modem" cable or a "lap link" cable). Where would I be able to pick one of them up, on a Saturday?

Oh, and how much would one cost? My sources say only about 5-10 bucks, is that about right?

null modem cables are very old tech, usually you only use them to hook into a router serial port

a crossover patch cable (RJ45) is ok as long as both computers have a NIC (Network Interface Card)

if you just have regular patch cables lying around you can plug both computers into the same hub (or switch) and set them to same local network settings

Laplink is a particular brand that makes various cables to do computer to computer transfers

depending on how much data you need to transfer you could also buy a USB storage key, which is a usefull item to have anyway

as to local sellers, there is Mikeys Hook Up in Williamsburg but it caters more to Mac and music needs.

Thanks for the post, but I'm afraid you're gonig to have to dumb it down some...I don't know what a router is, what patch cables are, or a hub is. I just have a program on my new computer that you run to transfer things from your old one, and it says I need a null modem cable. It seems idiot-proof, and I am an idiot, so...

I can get to Williamsburg if I have to, but I have a lot of errands close to home and was hoping to find a computer place in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill? There's got to be one, no? Even a Radio Shack or something?....

there's a circuit city and an office max in atlantic center. they should have what you're looking for.

...Noble thoughts all, but I'm not seeing the connection between co-ops and computer supplies. Unless you're claiming null modem cables are a type of parsnip or something.
