I saw a "For Rent" sign on Puppets Jazz, so I'm assuming it closed.

Anyone know the details?

The times I've walked by it recently it seemed open.
But I did notice the sign too.

The sign has been up for a while now - also on the record store next door. The landlord must be looking for someone willing to pay higher rent but letting Puppets stay on until that happens?

The record store is definitely closed. Not sure about Puppets though.

Puppets appears to be closed... the security gate had a spray painted message saying something to the effect of "We'll be back".

VerucaSalt is correct, Puppets is moving to a larger location as of August 1st. However they will still have live music up at the current location until they move.

Is Puppets moving into the space to the right of Commonwealth?

The address on the security gate corresponds to the nail shop between 11th and 12th (closer to 11th), which doesn't really look to me like it's a BIGGER space.

Does anybody know what's going in next to Commonwealth?

I was on my way to Puppet Jazz a few weeks ago and called to find out more about the night's performances. An answering machine picked up. The message did not list performers, but did say that a benefit was scheduled for that night and the price of admission was $50.00. I did not go.

That was a one time thing, with them trying to raise money to renovate the new space. Normally the cover is $5-10.

Well they did a crappy-ass job of promoting their one-time fund-raiser. I didn't know about it until the day of and had no idea of what they needed the money for and what I would get if I actually gave them the dough. With a $50.00 donation, at the very least they could offer to name the new bar after me.

In my opinion, one of the problems with Puppets is that they do a poor job promoting. I know it's very tough to start and run a jazz club in New York, but they've got a whole neighborhood at their hands and hardly anyone knows what's going on at Puppets and when. That is, if they even know if Puppets exists in the first place.

They should flyer the neighborhood, like everyone else, and attempt to draw in people through means other than one guy standing outside the club while it's open. I'm sad to see them moving down to south slope. It will become a bit of a trek for me to go, but I do think for them to succeed, they need to ramp up their self-promo efforts.

Agreed. While the whole "secret" bar thing is cool, being too secretive is just dumb business.

Check out the jazz at the Burger Bar every Thursday and Saturday night from 9-1. They're over on 7th Ave and 9st. There is no cover charge. I think you'll like the music.
