Never been, going tonight. Dish recommendations? What's the chef's tasting menu all about?

Well, I haven't been there yet. It's on my list of places to go. But seeing no one has responded I'll throw this out: from all the reviews I've read the tasting menu is great. So what the hell, try it.
I'm planing to, if I ever get a chance to splurge.

The tasting menu is glorious. Just go (you'll have to sit at the bar).

Palo Santo is great. About every aspect of it. Interesting cooking, great service. The wine list is fun, try the Valle de Guadalupe from Mexico. Surprisingly good. More of a modern style wine. Great decor if a little over the top. Prices are decent. This place along with A Di La, Red Cafe, Tempo, Convivium, Aliseo, even the overpriced Franny's really deliver the goods.

The best food! Trust the chef's menu, just go with the flow, as it is all fresh fresh fresh, and sooooooo thoughtfully done. Yumm. I wish I was going there again!!

I love the place. The food is really really good and people are nice. Except that the place is rather small and you may need to wait, and the kitchin is small too so you may need to wait for food again. Otherwise I really reccomend it.

Subject: SPLIT from Bruni/Franny: Palo Santo

I think Palo Santo deserves more praise than any other place, really innovative latin cuisine
MOD NOTE: this, and the next few posts were split off from a thread about Franny's, and merged into this discussion of Palo Santo.

So start a thread about Palo Santo, 'cause I don't see what it has to do with Franny's.

What dishes do you like there, and - because you were so enthusiastic about slagging other places I have to ask - do you have a financial tie to Palo Santo or do you work in the restaurant industry?

My opinion - Palo Santo's nice, but not brilliant. It is pricey. They have some nice wines.

They change their Menu daily, so what else can i say , go there and try it for yourself...No financial ties to it here!

yeah, I did: not that impressed
there's so much good food in this neighborhood that the bar is very high for any place in that price range

I'm willing to give them another shot on the tasting menu, rather than menu items, but, frankly, the menu items should be the standout or at least the easy illustrations of the strengths of the restaurant. and it'll be awhile before I decide to drop that cash on that joint. palo santo, in my opinion, not bad, but not great. nowhere near amazing. the wines are great choices - note how much they lean, though, on argentina. it was very obvious in their wine selections but not in the food selections. that's not really a happy place.

Eh....I went on Saturday night. The food was pretty good (had heirloom tomato salad with blue cheese and a strip steak which came with an interesting rice with cheese) However, we were disappointed that they "don't have bread" instead suggesting you order tortillas....they also only serve wine and beer (no hard liquor) and had 3 desserts which didn't appeal to anybody at our table. It wasn't cheap (which is fine), and we left hungry.

They do have two ADORABLE kitties roaming in the front yard. I know that freaks some people out, but I don't mind, and it's better than a kitchen full of mice

What's up with the small portions everywhere. Lately I've been coming back from dinner and having a PB & J sandwich an hour later.

I don't know if the portions were super small, or we were just ravenous. My steak was a decent size (actually, I think it was skirt steak, not strip...but can't really remember). I do wish they had bread and better desser selections.

I ended up eating sliders at Sheep Station later. Oopsie ;-)

Weird. I went back recently, and was (gulp) taken aback by the small portions too! I LOVED it when I first went there, and was sorta weirded out by how "fancy" it now seemed to me. Or maybe I was just ravenous too...."not really a happy place." Exactly.

I didn't find the portions super small at all. compared, for instance, to sorrell, their prix-fixe menu is very generous portion-wise (I had a chowder and a soupy rice as app and entree at palo santo). but, honestly, I'd rather have smaller portions of great food than giant portions of average food. if I want giant portions of great food, I'm heading to babbo.

I ate there last night and thought the experience was very good and worth the price. The service was fantastic. The heirloom appetizer was one of the best dishes I have ever had. My wife's appetizer, a jicama, grapefruit combo was only ok, but her duck with mole sauce was excellent. My lamb ribs were also excellent. No - the dishes were not huge, but they were enough (barely) to satisfy. I agree with the criticisms that they should serve bread and expand the beverage options (a nice Mojito would have been good). I also think the reggae music was a bit much and out of place. The meal, including drinks, tax and tip came to less than $90. On a scale of 0-10, I woluld give it a solid 7 overall with the kicker being the service.

Jamzer - my friend wanted a mojito as well. If I had some bread, I think I would have been full enough. Expanded dessert selection would serve them well too.

The food was all tasty, but there are many other places I'd like to try before going back again

Flexi - variety is the spice of life. I can't argue with you there. :D Please share your thoughts if you find a good new restaurant to try.

like i said before if franny's got 2 stars this place is worth more, i know you are all haters out there, but this is one of the most innovatives places in the whole of Brooklyn, not pizza and salads, i will always root for these guys. The chef is Fooking amazing!!!
