Don't forget that the 77th Precinct Council meeting is Monday, September 11, 2006, at 7pm. It will be held at the Precinct on the corner of Utica Avenue and Bergen Street. Lets start going to the meetings and making some changes in our community. If you have any questions you can call Det. Raton or Det. McLean at 718-735-0634.

Subject: How was the Community Board Meeting?

Did anybody attend? I'm curious to know what the precinct said.

My husband and I attended. It was our first. It went a bit long and started far too late... they let the candidates speak which I was fine with and some insurance agent plugging her products, which I was not fine with...

When the police rep spoke, forgot his name, he said noise is a real concern because they recognize that if people don't feel comfortable in their own living room, they won't feel comfortable on the streets. Which is a point I am glad they recognize. I will continue to complain when REALLY loud parties go ridiculously late.
Second, he explained that the increase in the number of rapes is not among strangers, meaning there is no serial rapist hiding in the bushes. Most are between people who are acquainted. I was glad to hear that.

He also discussed the labor day shootings. The police believe the have arrested the responsible parties and it sounds like they did.

my husband & i attended for the first time as well,

not sure that it actually started that late
i just believe that the information posted here was incorrect, talking to people afterwards led me to understand that these meetings start at 7:30 not 7.

i too was relieved to find out that the increase in rape numbers was due to incidents between parties who were known to each other rather than street crime.

there was another interesting fact that came to light, which is that the area between franklin & nostrand and lincoln & st.marks is basically the worst in CH. this came up after a question about why there aren't foot patrol cops anymore like there was about a year ago. apparently (and i was not in the neighborhood then) those cops were part of a program that gives a special detail to basically the worst 12 neighborhoods in... and here i am not sure if it's the city or just brooklyn...
anyway the good news is that we have not qualified for that lately but we will be submitted again in november.

i agree the meeting tended to tedious at times, especially the insurance "sales pitch" but i definitely felt it was worth while to go

we felt a warm welcome from both the precinct and the community and i urge anyone who feels concern to attend periodically as well. i am coming from a community that went through an industrial to residential change and the only way we got our precinct to respond to our needs was to be EXTREMELY vocal. after a while they caught on that they were making a difference in the lives of real people with real needs.

i also plan to attend the crow hill community meeting which is next tuesday and i will post those details when i have them

"franklin & nostrand and lincoln & st.marks is basically the worst in CH" Ughhh, that sucks; and here I was lulled into thinking that the majority of the badness was further east.

i honestly didn't post that to be a downer
but i do believe that if you care about something (whether it's your own personal safety or your community) sometimes it takes getting actively involved. some do it at a political level, others through helping with social issues or as part of a community group, but it does mean participation.

unfortunately, not every meeting one attends is likely to be stimulating, there are a lot of issues out there, not all of them are personally relevant but through participation it stops being a question of "lulled into thinking" and more one of understanding and dealing with the issues and then feeling as if you are having an impact.

believe me, i am far from a great activist, but i have put in my time at various points in my life and moving to a new neighborhood has motivated me to get involved again.

Thanks for that information. Judging from the scores of concerned
citizen posts, I would think that place will be filled to capacity tomorrow
