what happened to Video Edge?

I may be way behind on this, but I noticed that Video Edge is closed! My current job has me mainly taking the C or 2/3 trains so i haven't been by that corner in a while and have been watching movies on demand...but I loved that place...been renting there since 99. Does anyone know why they closed? Did they move? Where they forced out?

Because everyone gets their DVDs from Netflix now.

Yeah, video stores are dinosaurs.

They merged with another video store, I don't remember the name, on 7th Ave. around Carroll or Garfield. There was a sign up on the window of Video Edge a few weeks ago that said the change was "due to the changing rental climate." That could mean both rising rent on the physical space and DVD rental competition from Netflix. I would guess that both were a factor. All Video Edge customers are supposed to automatically have an account now at the other place.

Really sad. It was a great store.

yeah, video forum. i'll miss the corner of flatbush location and the stopping in after just exiting the Q train - especially in the winter.

It's so sad that so many little shops in Brooklyn have closed down in the last few years due to monstrous chain-stores. and i'm not just talking about video stores - but any kind of stores you can think of.
i don't think theres much we can do except for supporting small shops by buying there and not at the bigger chain stores.

In the case of video stores, I think Netflix and bit torrents have hurt them more than the chain stores. The era of the big video stores closing out the little guys was a story of the 80s. The ones that survived that era offered something that didn't really compete with the Blockbusters anymore. But now I think even Blockbuster is doomed by Netflix and bit torrents.

if hollywood video closed then independent video stores are screwed.
