my hairdresser is in jersey, which is fine for regular trims but i am going to need someone to do-up the `do for my brother's brooklyn wedding in december.

can anyone recommend anyone local who can make me look like a million bucks with just a few hairpins and the twist of a wrist?

Try Mia, (212)961-7019 or (631)920-2997, her co. is Bridal Lounge. She came to PS 2x to do a trial for me.

You could check out Pilo Arts in Bay Ridge. They are located on 85th and 3rd. You could take the R train to 86th St. and walk 2 blocks or drive straight down 4th ave. Either way you will be there in 20 minutes. They have a website with all of their services and pricing info.

Element (I think it's called) on 4th ave and 2nd or 3rd street in PS did all the hair for my friend's bridal party and moms, plus hair and makeup for the bride recently and did an amazing job, plus hooked us all up with free bagels, coffee and mimosas. Between all of us, I got to see their up-do work, a pretty style for long hair, plus an awesome finger wave 'do for the bride's sis who has very short hair -- all were great. Definitely worth looking into.
