Grocery store options near 7th and 15th?

My friend just moved into an apt on 7th ave bt 15-16th and we're having a hard time finding a normal, non-bodega grocery option. I lived in the slope last year but I was way down on the other side of 7th (at lincoln) so I went to the key foods down near there but thats a HIKE from his house. Suggestions?
I did see something going in around 13th or something but thats not open yet and its boasting to be some kind of "gourmet" grocery (read- really expensive and without kraft mac n cheese...)

Help!

there are no real grocery stores near that area - there is a larger than a bodega grocery store on prospect park west and around 16th street? - the new revamped one on 8th ave. and 12th street is bodega/health food store - there is Pumpkin's Organic Market on 13th street and 8th avenue - health food/specialty store (expensive but great) - probably best bet is to trek to fairway if your loading up or you could eat thai takeout every night - you have a million options for that :)

^yeah thats the gourmet place I was talking about. The boy does like to cook, but there's already a really cute little deli/market right there on 14th-15th where we can get meat and cheese and stuff... Maybe it'll surprise me and be more like a normal grocery store.

it is a nice place. expensive yes, but the stuff there is high quality.

you can get a few of the basics, but you're right...you can't really do all your shopping at union market.

if you want a preview, go check out the one up at union and 6th to see what you're in store for.

    no pun intended.

In the area?!!What the hell does that mean? There are 6billion places to shop within walking distance. Must we have a grocery every 3 blocks?

    try walking. It's cool.

^I'm not entirely sure where that keyfoods is, but if memory serves its near union...which is a good 17 blocks or so (about a mile.) Its a nice walk...when you're not trying to carry $200 worth of groceries and frozen foods. Its more about the frozen stuff than anything else, plus who wants to make multiple trips to the grocery store in a week if its avoidable?!

    Isn't there a D'agostino's by 7th Ave. and 5th or 6th?

That D'agostino closed a few months ago. How about Fresh Direct?

The closest grocery store to you is C-Town on 9th St between 5th and 6th. Yes, Union Market is opening "in the fall", whatever that means (I think that it is fall!). There are also a bunch of various shops on 5th Avenue between 17th and 19th including Eagle Provisions, a health food store and a small clean I think Associated or Met Foods - I don't remember which one but the other one is between Prospect and 16th that is not so clean but good for basics.

actually, i think the KeyFood on Prospect Avenue between 10th & 11th Aves is closer to you than the others mentioned here.

    welcome to the nabe

Yeah, the Met Food at 597 5th Ave--btwn 16th St & Prospect--on the same block and same side of the street as Buttermilk. Not the greatest selection but better than the average corner bodega.

    Welcome to the 'hood.

and, on the northeast corner of 15th and 5th is a fabulous and super-cheap produce market.

I went to that KeyFood once, and will not go back if I can avoid it. Decent size, not too filthy or anything... but both staff and customers looked like the cast from a Twillight Zone special.

Steve's is great, and is walking distance. For the odd item, the creatively named "Supermarket" on the corner of 7th Ave and 11th Street does the job. If you have a car, Pathmark down by 12th & 2nd Ave is huge and cheap, and there's always Costco.

There is a small grocery store on 5th Avenue and 18th Street. Its has a larger selection than a bodega, but not a huge Pathmark/Keyfoods type place. They do however, have an excellent deli and bakery. I do the majority of my grocery shopping there and almost always find what I am looking for.

all this info is great, guys- keep it comin if you've got more suggestions! I'll share this whole thread with him...
Unfortunately neither of us have a car in the city, so we're stuck either zip-carring it or walkin!

Not sure if it is an option, but Fresh Direct is pretty convenient. I know of all the complaints, but I am a pretty big fan.

That would be Eagle Provisions. OK for most things but watch the expiration dates - they don't have the fastest turnover there. Plus they close at 7PM Monday-Sat and at 5PM on Sundays, which makes the afterwork shopping difficult!

REAL men have enough self-confidence to use a granny cart.

    Go to Steve's C-Town on 9th.

but IMHO is not worth the trip, I drive by it to get to Fairway or Keyfood on 5th Ave or Steve's C-Town in that order

I used to live right near there and the C-Town on 9th Street is definitely walkable and is a "normal" supermarket with kraft mac & cheese etc. And they deliver, or you can bring your granny cart. The little supermarket on 7th Ave at 11th Street is good for picking up the things you forgot to get at C-Town. I went to the Key Food in Windsor Terrace once, and never again. It was like it was frozen in the 1950s. That was a while ago, so they may have updated since then.

Would that that were true. In the 50's people were friendly and store owners accommodating. I made the mistake of letting the owner know of a product that I wanted, she could care less.

I thought real men double-parked their Hummers outside and sent their girlfriends in to buy the beer and pretzels?

Thanks for all the tips, everyone- I ventured to that Met 5th near 16th over the weekend and was assaulted with the smell of rotting meat upon entering the door...won't be going back there. the c-town seems to be the winner, their produce was actually pretty decent! And that little produce market on 5th and 15th was really fresh and nice.

That was the one place that I warned you about! Try the associated on 17th and Eagle Provisions on 18th. There is also a small health food store between 17th and 18th.
