New to the Neighborhood

My Husband and I are planning to move to the 4th Ave/25th Street area. We are not sure if this is Greenwood Heights or South Park Slope or Sunset Park. The borders between all of these areas seem confusing. In any case, we would love to hear from all of you seasoned residents. Is the area safe? We really liked it when we were looking around but wanted to talk to some residents.

Thanks!

i actually just moved out from there (4th Ave and 22nd) and the name of the neighborhood seems to be really up in the air. Realtors say South Slope, residents say GH or Sunset Park. So maybe South Sunset Heights could work? But yes, it's a safe area. I never ran into any issues with sketchy folks or anything, it's mostly families. If you're on 4th Ave it can be a bit noisy when you're trying to sleep but ya get used to it. The DnD right next to the subway station smells great when you get home from work heh. There's alot of great bars and restaurants and shops up on 5th Ave. Gotta walk up towards the lower numbers before ya start hitting more places but it's pushing south. There's a neat new bar on 5th and 20th called Quarter which has a nice back garden area, nice beer selection and a pretty killer jukebox. Oh and Brothers Pizza on 4th and 20th will become your new favorite pizza shop, the guys who work there always have the biggest smiles on their faces. Enjoy the neighborhood! I miss it already =

feels pretty safe to me. i agree with rtraindweller-- it's mostly families who aren't really interested in the people walking by. it's actually very quiet at night once you leave 4th ave. i just moved in a few months ago and was expecting much more "hola mami" kind of leering on the industrial streets like 24th and by the power plant, but it's been fine. there are always other people getting on and off the train at 25th regardless of the time of night or day. i don't like to cross under the gowanus or walk down 24th at night because the streets aren't very well lit.

i'd call it GWH! and i love Quarter, too. and Milan's the city's only Slovak restaurant.

I live on 26th at 5th Ave. and I feel fairly safe even coming home late at night. I sometimes encounter guys hanging around and they might whistle or something, but everyone seems pretty harmless. The area is also really well lit, thanks to all the industry, and there's a police precinct a few blocks down 4th Ave.

Oh, and as far as I know, no one knows what to call the area, I think because it wasn't until recently a very populated and talked-about neighborhood. Greenwood Heights was the name created by a developer in the 1980s; Park Slopers would say we're too far south to even be called South Slope. And I consider Sunset Park to not reach farther north than 36th. So just get ready to give a lengthy description of where you live all the time!

Thanks to all of you who replied. This is quite helpful. It is always a little daunting to move to a new area if you don't know anyone but I think we are going ahead. We'll probably bump into some of you on the street!
