help! my mom is visiting--fun ideas??

Hey! My mom is visiting and I'm trying to think of something fun for us to do tonight. Just looking for something fun and different in Brooklyn or NYC. Maybe a coffee house or a really fun icecream place? Or really just ANYTHING(something different that you wouldn't find in the midwest where she's from!)! I just don't know where the good spots are since I'm relatively new to the area, so let me know if you do!! THANK YOU!!!

I'm trying but can't think of anything real good at night for moms.
If you have the funds, take her to a nice dinner. Convivium, Al Di La, Sushi -Blue Ribbon?
There is real good italian in Carrol Gardens? Lucali's, Savoia...

Maybe head over to BAM cafe for some nice jazz, pick up a slice of Junior's strawberry cheesecake and then head for some burlesque at Barette on Vandy. Hope you guys have a fun evening together!

go out to dinner, get her a little tipsy and walk around the neighborhood. north slope on 5th ave can get a little lively on the weekends. the neighborhood is so charming I love just walking around and taking in the architecture sometimes.

When my mom visited, my daughter (who is 9) and I took her to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Judy Chicago exhibit - The Dinner Party. It's permanently housed there now, and it's a great mother-daughter experience. I took my little girl there as a Mommy-Livvie thing, and then we went with Grandma and it was amazing, because by that point Livvie had memorized all the place settings and could tell Grandma who Isis was. (My mom has a doctorate in theology from Harvard, so you can imagine how touched she was.)

The Emily Dickinson plate is my favorite. But I love pink.

if she's into shopping take her to century 21 or some other places.

but definitely take her around the area for dinner and walk around. to show her your surroundings. where you like to go and do.

My mom and I like going to Chinatown for dim sum. You can do either the Manhattan or Bklyn Chinatown.

Things I've done with my mom in Brooklyn:
Century 21
Bedford St. in Williamsburg - look at shops, have coffee and pastries in one of the cafes
Walk around DUMBO, shop and eat, look at galleries (she liked the ABC warehouse although we saw a HUGE RAT walking over the $100 pillows!, but no longer there)
Walk along Montague St. and the Promenade (also went to the Rotunda Gallery on Clinton)
Brooklyn Museum
Shopping at Fairway - she LOVED this.

My mom would love Grand st. -all those cheap handbags! Grab some dumplings and scallion pancakes.
Then a walk up Broadway to all the girly shops (H&M!). Then maybe a skip over to SOHO for a slice of vodka-sauce pizza at that pizza parlor across from the bar Shark (can't remember the name, it's famous for it's sauce).

I guess your mom wouldn't be into bringing you stuff from places like TJs, Costco and Target....cooking you a home-cooked meal and then being disgusted with your apartment so cleaning it better herself, huh?

Eh, my mom doesn't like it either, but that's what happens sometimes :-)

We also go to movies (especially stuff she can't see in suburbia), walk around the 'hood, try restaurants, botanical gardens....

Forget about shopping,eating out and museums, give some her real bklyn experiences,try.
car jacking.
a drive by.
a tour of crack houses.
mug someone.
I'm sure on her next visit she will bring all her friends

Forget waiting for my mom to visit - I'm definitely checking that place out soon! Mmm, chocolate...

Partly depends on where you're from and what she likes to do. There are so many good restaurants, the park is beautiful, and things not in Park Slope such as heading up into Manhattan, that's not much of an inconvenience.

Also, someone said paintball? *I*'d be interested in that! ^^

Oooh, I second that! I always take out-of-towners there; it's fascinating. And they have several different tours, so you can take something new each time and not get bored with it yourself.

Plus when your tour ends you exit onto Allen right next to Congee Village, which is a great place to take a visitor for a bite.
