2007/2008 "HEAT SEASON" BEGINS: HPD ENFORCES LAWS REQUIRING BUILDING OWNERS TO PROVIDE HEAT

New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Shaun Donovan today reminded residential building owners of their legal obligation to provide tenants with hot water year-round and 24-hour heat when the outdoor temperature warrants it.

The 2007/2008 "heat season" begins today and continues through May 31, 2008. During heat season, residential owners with tenants are required by law to maintain an indoor temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. when the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees. Between 10:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M., building owners must maintain an indoor temperature of 55 degrees when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees.

I'm soooooo ready for heat. Has anybody's heat kicked in yet?

Nope. Thus the preoccupation. I'm freezing. However, I think it's only(!) 57 out there.

I'm obsessed with it too, and cold....but the thermostat is the hallway says 68, so i can't say anything (yet)

My slumlord, er, I mean apartment building owner, doesn't hear the plaintive cries of his tenants until late October - the fireplace and the portable electric heater help out during this heat lag time.

slumlord here, I'm gonna turn mine buildings on at night before i goto work.

I hear the sounds of heat coming up through the riser...but have yet to FEEL any of it and the riser is cold to the touch. So...space heaters. Gaaah.

just check mines its on auto yay. I hope some of the tenants know to turn the valves on and off to unwanted heat.

My first apartment was an icebox in the winter but I bought thermal curtains and it helped a lot.

No heat here yet, but the building is plenty warm still.

I just wish those bloody space heaters didn't rack my electric bill so high. Mine isn't even all that big, but after some of the bills I got last fall/winter I'm almost scared to turn it on.

I'm pretty sure my wallet and checkbook are hiding because I looked at said heater in consideration this week... Haven't seen them since....

if your landlord isnt generous with the heat......the good old hot water bottle is amazing for sleeping like a baby on those frigid nights - also environmentally conscious too! and dont forget the hat!
