CANAILLE: french comfort food?

CANAILLE With a look that does not announce its newly minted status and a bistro menu of French comfort food, this place, whose name means scoundrel, opened last week, cash only: 78 Fifth Avenue (St. Marks Place), Park Slope, Brooklyn, (718) 789-8899.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this place before.

    I checked out the menu yesterday. it wasn't very impressive - a bit pricey. also, the music coming from inside the place was really, really bad techno. I'll wait for someone I know to give it a shot, first.

    I'm not sure I'd call it comfort food, but it is good, traditional French bistro food. We went just after it opened and it was very good - we shared the arugula salad with baby beets, I had moules frites which were very tasty, and my fiancé had the lamb chops - also very good. We didn't have room for dessert but other in the restaurant said the chocolate pot de creme was incredible.

    The owner is very attentive, recommended good wine by the glass, and we made friends with the couple sitting next to us. There was no bad techno music playing (I don't recall any music, actually) - maybe they weren't open and the kitchen was gearing up for the night? It is a nice, cozy, classic place. The prices might be a *tad* high but the food is very fresh and good, and they are certainly less than anything you'd get in Manhattan (I don't think there was anything on the menu over $20 which is reasonably in my book).

    I'm very happy that NoSlope has a nice French place like this that makes the basics well... I hope they are successful!

    Is that the place where mekong used to be? I've walked by there a lot, still yet to check it out? It looks pretty busy, can't be that bad. The only other french place I've been to in the neighborhood is Belleville and they are way to overpriced.

    it's where the red cafe (was that the name? the joint with the pork burger) used to be.
