Trick or Treating in the slope

Hello there!
I will be spending my first Halloween in the neighborhood wanted to know how much candy to get for the trick or treaters. I'm assuming there are a lot and am looking forward to it, just want to make sure I'm stocked up!

Interestingly, my husband and I never have any doorbell ringing "Trick-or-Treaters."
There are a ton of kids that go down 7th ave for the Halloween parade. Then after the parade is over, there are lots of people that walk down our block. To get rid of our candy though, we just hang out outside and drop pieces into everyone's bag, some say trick or treat, some don't, but in any event they have us well trained.
It really depends on how much candy you want to hand out. 2 or 3 bags is usually enough for us though.

i dont know about park slope. but in other hoods in brooklyn. if the house doesn't have halloween decorations. kids skip ringing the bells.

yeah,never had doorbbell ringers either. we usually hang out outside our homes and give our candy to the kids before or after the parade.

If you're on Garfield near 7th, buy lots of candy and you'll probably run out before the parade starts no matter how much you buy. It's standard trick-or treat M.O. for you to sit on your stoop if you have candy and wait for the hordes to descend. Generally the only kids that ever ring our bell are the desperate ones whose parents took them trick-or treating too late and everyone else is cleaned out. I don't really want kids trying to climb our stoop wearing vision-impairing masks and costumes they'll trip over anyway.
We live on a block that's not quite as center-slope as yours and we can go through 40 or 50 bucks of candy easily. I think Halloween is the biggest holiday of the year by far around here (in terms of neighborhood participation, I mean). Have fun!

my experience is the same as petunia's, but i am at the other end of the nabe (So Slope, Windsor Place). i sit outside along with all my neighbors and hand out candy left and right.

it's going to vary from block to block, so you'd be best to poll your neighbors. and don't forget to go to the parade!!

I put a skeleton up on the door one year, and still barely had any ringers until we hung around on the stoop...I don't bother anymore because we end up eating the candy the next day.
But go to Seventh Ave to see the kids parade - it is seriously hilariously cute.

i love kids and halloween. if i'm not working that night this year. i'll be sit around home(giving out candy hehe) or going to the parade.

If you go back 20 years or more the Parade was in manhattan... especially during the years that it did the bleeker street route up from west and Bethune (now that was in the 80's) but I would much rather stay at home in the Slope. the 7th Ave parade is festive, adorable and home grown. I think kids go trick or treating to stores on 7th and even 5th Ave to some degree but we never get kids ringing the bell at our house.

Frankly I think Marty is some kind of spirit or apparition.. He has been known to show up at two Brooklyn events at the same time (o.k..... read that one , one after the other quickly.. creating a feeling of simultaneous).

When Marty used to live in my neighborhood (Flatbush/Ditmas Park), he would jog around the neighborhood in pink short-shorts. So cute! I wish he would wear those as his Halloween costume to the parade.
