also, if anyone knows more about what happened...since people who do rescue frequent this board I'd like to know if you've heard about the rescue connection here.

On gowanuslounge, someone said the killer dog was a rescue that was supervised by someone from a rescue group. Off-leash on Monday afternoon, when it's not legal.

I hope someone doing rescue wouldn't be so stupid as to let a dog in their care off-leash, no matter what the hour. I spent months with my adopted dogs before I let them off-leash in the park!

It's sad all the way around and worst of all, most people will come away with nothing but "pitbulls are vicious!"

The attacking dog was taken by the police, and I hear the dachshund survived, through the good work of Animal Kind and the Animal Medical Center.
The attacking dog was evidently a temporary foster and was off-leash at the dog beach during non-off-leash hours.
There's the roots of the tragedy.
I can understand how easily that might happen, but it makes me furious.

I've posted this in the past:
You can report dog bites to the precinct and to the parks dept, but it takes persistence. I think it's the least we can do to help stop a dangerous situation.
When my dog was bit, I ended up filing a report with Sgt Johnson at the Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol Office. 718 437-1351
At the time I asked permission to post their number here, although you can also get them (eventually, if you're lucky) by calling 311.
