getting to Troy - which is better?

hi all,

I need to get to Troy btwn Sterling & Park on Friday evening (I live on Washington). I haven't been much past Franklin or Nostrand on those streets so I'm unfamiliar with the blocks past there. which street is better for a lone, albeit street smart, woman to walk east on? I'll probably take a car home but the event I'm attending starts at 7:30 so I figure I'll walk there for some post-work exercise. I just don't want to find myself on the creepy, fully dark abandoned block, ya know?

I've walked that way from Utica to Nostrand along Sterling Place at night and felt a bit nervous until Albany. I don't really think you'll have a problem but it's just a bit sketch. If you really want well lit and well traveled just pop up to Eastern Parkway.

Walk on St Johns Place.....it becomes a 2 way street at Nostrand and is a bus route then cut down to Sterling when you get to Troy Ave.That is a more travelled road vehicle and pedestrian wise cause you have at least a 10 block walk.

sadly, I think the minimum is now $6. it's supposed to rain so I will probably just take the 3 or 4 to utica. so much for exercise.

okay, ended up in a car service b/c someone else was coming with me and it was raining. but - is it weird that a car service would take e. pkway from washington to troy when st. johns is right there?? I half assed argued with the guy and then just gave up.

not particularly. Every time I get into a cab around here, they take Eastern Parkway if they can. It's a habit.

I think they take EP because St John's has the bus route and is a one lane for several blocks. Its murder getting caught behind a bus and not being able to go around.

some drivers don't listen, i hate them lol. once i had to goto the navy yard from washington. he took the longest way possible. instead of going straight up on washington. he drove all the way to flatbush and up and got close the bridge and turned.

i try to tell him just go up but guy refused to listen.

finally took the bus to Troy - was fantastic. it was FREEZING this past friday night and I ran for the bus and caught it - awesome. also, I really liked the kinda slow trundle up st. johns - I got to glance up and down avenues, and spot the places on st. johns, and thought to myself 'um. yum.' very often. despite the cold, the bus was the best option. and, at the hour I was traveling - between 7 and 8 - a lot of churches and such were letting out so I had plenty of company when I got off of the bus that was purposeful and safe.

thanks for all of your advice. and omg - I think I need to explore, on foot, further into CH. so many things I saw from the bus that I thought I needed to see/taste/experience up close.

I've always eyed Glenda's on my rides on the 45...anyone know how their food is? Would you recommend it?

Hey, Alfy, I'll be happy to be your guide/fellow explorer. I sort of know my way around, but the routes I use are limited, so it would be cool to explore further. Maybe we could do a veggie restaurant crawl, except we'd probably be full by the third place. It's easy to get a LOT of food for very little money.

Based on the recommendation of someone on the boards I tried roti at Glenda's. IT IS FABULOUS!!! They do it homestyle with the bread warmed on a large flat griddle, rather than microwaved. Best part is I discovered that they are often open late so that I've gotten roti after 9pm as I was on my way home from the subway.

I'd definitely recommend to any roti lovers.
