Nice Restaurant for Christmas dinner?

My husband and I are looking for a nice restaurant in the neighborhood for Christmas dinner. Anyone know of any places that ore open on the 25th? Thanks for you help.

The pricey but wonderful River Cafe under the Bridge is open for Christmas. Saul in Boerum Hill is open Christmas Eve and usually serves a fantastic Feast of the Seven Fishes.

I think finding a good restaurant in Park Slope that's actually open for Christmas dinner may be tough - try Rosewater, Stone Park Cafe and Magnolia for starters.

And of course Chinese restaurants are always open on Christmas.

We went to The River Cafe for dinner last year and are just not willing to spend that kind of cash for one meal EVER again. A once in a lifetime meal...

Is Rosewater good? It's right down the street from me.

That sounded like just the right choice for Jewish or the no Jewish trying to avoid obvious choices, Chinese food.... even the lowest ... seems like the right choice.

I just went to their web site and Rosewater is closed for Christmas and so is Stone Park (I was there last night and asked if they were open).

Rosewater is a great restaurant -definitely try it some time.

veets - I have come to the conclusion that you are absolutely right. Against all my best instincts and experiences and still hoping and praying that dining experiences on traditional holidays would be so much more than they actually are, and after having "just OK, but not for the money" experiences at top restaurants for Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas, my wife and I have finally decide to say no mas!

We will still go out for those holidays but probably to Chinese restaurants, diners and maybe Magnolia - but no more Saul, River Cafe, Stone Park Cafe, Applewod, etc., etc.

Is Magnolia open for Christmas?

12th St Bar & Grill is a great place for a meal. I just talked to a guy there and they are not sure if they will be open Christmas day or not, but said they will have a decision by the first week of December. That would definitely be worth checking out. Great food, terrific service...never had a bad meal there.

So...Christmas is getting closer and still no reservation...

Has anyone been to Black Pearl on Union Street? Is it any good?

We went to Black Pearl for dinner some months ago, and very much liked it.

I agree with the previous poster... we've been to the 12th Street Bar & Grill many times over many years, and always had terrific meals there.

What about Applewood? We had a delicious brunch there a while ago and keep meaning to head over that way for dinner one night. Their dinner menu looked lovely and I don't remember it being shockingly expensive....good for a special dinner.

Applewood at dinner is also excellent.

I ordered in from there a few months ago. To be fair, I made poor choices for delivery (pasta with seafood, neither of which travels well), but it wasn't great. I'll have to give it a try for actual eat-in.

I guess I am old fashioned, but, when did Christmas turn into a going out to dinner day? or, a day for looking for some activity to do?

I mean, I understand if you don't celebrate the holiday, but I get the impression that people do celebrate Christmas and are still looking to eat out or go some place. I don't get it, isn't it a family, stay at home or with friends holiday?

Tonio's on 7th Avenue near 8th Street will be open on Christmas Day

Hi Reader -- I called Tonio's and they are NOT open on Christmas Day,,,,only on Christmas Eve.

Magnolia IS open on Christmas Day. They have their regular menu and will have some Christmas specials. (They said they are not sure yet what the specials will be. It is up to their Chef, and will not know til a day or two before Christmas.)

Yeah.. for whatever reason I understand people aren't in to cooking for the holiday but they do want to spend that day with some folk and they need a place to eat OUT.. too bad the choices seem so limited. I do remember a time where it was impossible to even find a place to buy a pack of cigarettes on Christmas or New years day!! Really!

Yes, i remember those days also. i guess the people who run the restaurants, etc. are at home with their families.

I don't want to cook that day either, that is why i ordered catered trays to bring in.

BTW, the thing about the neighbor's dog stealing the turkey cracked me up-is that a big problem nowadays? LOL

i don't know about nowadays, but my mother remembers her sister's dog bringing home a beautiful beef roast once. their mother called all the neighbors, but they couldn't figure out where it had come from.

my grandmother had 8 children to feed, so she washed it off and cooked it for dinner.

Well, it was certainly a problem for Ralphie's dad in "A Christmas Story." But if you don't live next door to Mr. Bumpus you're probably in the clear!
