Digital camera repair place?

My Canon Powershot s70 was mysteriously damaged Thanksgiving night. I used it at my parents and put it in my bag, I took a cab home and left the bag on a table. When I took it out the next morning the battery cover was off and in pieces, with a metal piece as well. It looked like little gremlins had taken a tiny hammer to it in the middle of the night. So now my camera isn't working and the nearest Canon repair place according to their website is in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. I'd really rather not have to send my camera in, especially if it's something that could be fixed locally. If it turns out to be more expensive then I'll just send it in and pay the $100 or so for Canon to fix it. Anyone know of a good place to get it fixed?

Try putting in a call to B&H Photo and asking them if there is a local place for repair. They are one of the biggest retailers in the city for cameras and photo equipment and may be able to point you in the right direction.
