Darn! I just got Carjacked!!!

Well stupidly of me, I was unloading some groceries from my vehicle, when I was approached by 3 nice men displaying a firearm. They said give me your car keys or else. The nice men proceeded to take my keys and drive off. Since the car was an older model I decided not to report the incident. These guys even though, pointed the gun in my face, seemed to need my vehicle more than me. I only use it on the weekends anyway to go to Fairway. So all though I'm on foot once again, I'm lookin at the bright side, I get a Tax write off for 2007 and I still get the last laugh cause I left those nice men with only 1/2 a Tank. So there!!!!

The sad thing is not that i believed your wonderful tale, it's that with all the crime going on it's not that far fetched.
And you know they'll just dump that car once the gas is up - with the prices these days.

brilliant. there's no sense in arguing with "oh shucks I just got mugged" as the poster will just point out the deplorable conditions of jail and how those going in come out the worse for wear, and that's why i didn't report these lil' dudes. i hated that thread.

on that note, does anyone remember "Scared Straight" the TV program from, man, the early 1980s i think, that put young juvvies in lockup and terrified them? Would this work today?

this made me laugh in the midst of an otherwise drab and boring day at work. thank you.

Except I did end up reporting them for the sake of what I imagine to be the community's will. But wouldn't you know it? I still found no one with any experience in the corrections system who could actually debunk what I was saying regarding the impact of incarceration on both offenders and the communities they came from. Golly gee, what a difference actually reading makes!

We can't refute you! You are correct. But so are we to scold you for not reporting the crime. So you see, we're at an impasse. Ugh.

What impasse? I reported the crime. It's done. There's no more I can do besides help form a neighborhood watch, post up security cameras, or become a vigilante.

Is it policy on this board to not actually read what someone else writes after you find one sentiment that frustrates you? I guess I missed that in the user agreement.

i don't know the TV program but i do know that it's a popular nyc field trip to take the kids up north and they are basically treated like prisoners. i mean, they also hear the sob stories of inmates -- usually ones from their own neighborhood. i think it probably works, at least a little bit.

I don't think anyone is arguing whether or not criminals are being rehabilitated in prison. So does that mean we elect not to prosecute them? Whether or not they get rehabilitated or not, I know I won't be getting Robbed by these same shitheads if they're in Jail!

Shame on you, KWAC! Don't you realize that it is the responsibility of the victim to protect the perpetrator rather than the broader community? I mean, who cares about future victims when the well-being of criminals is at stake?

I, for one, am glad that the original poster was so concerned about these upstanding young men. I hope that others are equally understanding. Otherwise, crime may go down further. Perish the thought.

The original poster has already explained MULTIPLE times that he did end up reporting this to the police. And whaddaya know, he was persuaded to do so by some of the posters here who were reasonable and civil in their explanations of why they thought not doing so was a mistake -- NOT by people who flamed him, and not by those of you who persist in yukking it up at his expense.

Perhaps the "impasse" is the conflict between the safety of your community (being a good member of your community) and not wanting to put another person into a corrupt system (turning the other cheek). Unfortunately you can't have it both ways and your community and home has to take priority. I would imagine that there are other things that you can do to help the kids in your community besides turning a blind eye or any of the other options that you mentioned that could potentially help your community AND keep kids out of jail.
