Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture

Is anyone a member or (has been) affiliated with the society? Ive been thinking about stopping by to learn more about their mission and what they offer.

Any insight is appreciated.

When I checked out www.bsec.org's mission and vision page, it read "PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON..........."

Is the BSEC similar to a unitarian church?

Is that the same building that Brooklyn Ethical Culture school used to be in?

the building is on PPW, a gorgeous antique home filled with arts and crafts antiques and more.

been to a few events there, and from what i've seen the crowd is a little crunchier and older than i am (think peter paul and mary). i've never been to any actual meetings. but ethical culture is a really, really interesting group. if nothing else, it's worth a trip over there just to see what's inside.

as for the school, i don't know. i know there's an ethical culture school in manhattan that's the lower school to fieldston.

Nevermind, its this one. I should have just asked my husbandy in the first place since he went there. Duh.

Real estate is real estate I guess. This is the one city where no one cares about the irony of what was there before.

Its cool that you guys brought Ethical Culture up though. I didn't realize there were branches outside NY. I'll have to tell my mom in STL about it. Maybe it will give her something interesting to do. Then again, from their website it looks like the Missouri ones may be a little heavy on the religion side. One of their upcoming events is "Jesus as an Ethical Hero". And since my mom is Jewish... :?

Um...I think that your Mom would find that she was not alone there.

My crunchy old atheist jewish grandpa has been insisting i check out the society for years. I think he hopes I'll meet a nice non-religious (jewish) boy there since i dont go to synagogue or anything of that sort, and it functions similarly to the way a church/synagogue does, without all the religious b.s.

Although i kind of figured it would be a bunch of old folks, so thats why i was wondering if anyone has been there. Although I do know of someone who was in their twenties and met their (ex) wife there, so who knows....

What do you mean? What about Poly is at odds with their ethos?

Well it depends on what you mean by old folks!

Even if they are a bit crunchy, you should check it out anyway. What can it hurt? They are a very nice bunch of people.
