I'm looking for some software that allegedly exists but I've never seen before. it is some sort of mapping software that proportionally resizes states based on data. for instance, if you wanted a map that showed that 100 payouts had been made in florida and 10 had been made in texas it would not only put those numbers on those states, but make florida proportionally larger than texas. make sense? does it exist?

thanks.

I have definitely seen that done with political type stuff - electoral votes, etc. I'm pretty sure it was in the NYT - if you know anyone there, give 'em a try.

And yeah, I'm sorry that's not super helpful.

Dunno exactly, but I would call it a density distortion map or something like that.

Just looked around, and you can create your own global ones here:
    http://www.worldmapper.org/

No idea if anyone has such a thing for just these Untied States.

    ******edited to add the following******

The term you seek may be "cartogram," as discussed here:

See this page in specific for pointers to more reading, example applets etc:

In terms of customizing with your own data, the researcher from the links above seems to be partial to MAPresso, found here:

    Have fun.
