PETA Killed 97 Percent of 'Companion Animals' in 2006, According to VDACS

Death toll up to 17,400; overdue report describes PETA's deadliest year ever

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.

Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007.

"Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support. PETA is not one of them."

In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.

Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case. Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters.

"PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see. The scale of PETA's hypocrisy is simply staggering."

There's an episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit on Peta. For whatever year they were looking at, they found similar issues listed in the article--the freezer for storing animals they euthanized, and they did their share of that. If you're curious, I recommend renting that dvd just see their view of Peta and how they use their money, etc.

it's no new news that PETA euthanizes a large number of the animals brought in to their shelter, that's something that's been known for years and was a strong reason I never support PETA when I was vegetarian (also couldn't stand the preachiness). Seeing these numbers now though, wow.

Always knew PETA supporters were a bunch of full of crap hypocrites, but those numbers are amazing. Can't imagine who would support that!

I've been a vegetarian for over a decade, but I've always thought diet was and should be personal choice. I hate being lectured on my diet and have been known to eat a burger to piss off militant vegetarians (even though I would pay a price later; I gave up meat because of a crotchety gall bladder). When some guy with an orange mohawk has the chutzpah to approach me in a cafe, draw a cow on my newspaper and scream, "LOOK!!! NO MOO!!! NO MOO!!!" I just want to get back at him somehow. But maybe that's just me.

PETA seems to be engaged in euthanasia, but only of animals. I think taxon is a personal thing. Will PETA be there to help me if I wind up as a vegetable?

People love to hate PETA and this Press Release is information to use against them by those interests groups, not to solve the problem of unwanted animals. Personally, I dislike PETA's extreme methods, but believe very much in the ethical treatment of animals (I'm a vegetarian). The issue of euthanizing animals is one that no one likes to think about. I wish a bigger deal were made of it and some kind of legislation or something could be done about breeders and pet stores.

I understand the purposes of euthanasia because of overcrowding of shelters, but those numbers did seem a little high. Do city shelters have that high of a euthanasia rate?

However, there are PETA extremists who would say that having a pet is wrong. "Total Animal Liberation" remember? Taming or keeping a domestic animal is wrong in their books.

I think my cat Penny would give them conniptions. He's a former wildcat (bobcat mix) who tamed himself because he preferred a cushy life of being fed regularly and loved rather than one of chasing mice in the Minnesota cold. The vet even remarked that if Penny hadn't had such a sweet temperament, he'd be lethal. I didn't tame him. It was his choice. He came to my house and behaved himself from day one. He's had a longer, better life as a result. (Oh yeah, and I'm sure that his treatment for kidney disease which has kept him healthy for the past five years came about as a result of animal testing.) If he were out in the wild, he'd be dead now. (And no, I don't worry about him "turning on me". He's 16, too set in his ways of being sweet to the point of RUNNING AWAY FROM A MOUSE, and too old and frail to do much damage anyway.)
