Vacant space next to Barboncino on Franklin Av.

We've lived here over 6 years and this space has been empty (apart from trash and boxes) as long as we can remember. I recall hearing a few months back that Ron at Barboncino was checking it out, possibly to expand Barboncino. Anyone know WHY this space has been sitting here vacant all these years? Someone is obviously storing their crap here. Any insights?

Can you get us the street address?

Helps the site get google hits, and me to tap my sources.

I believe it's 785 Franklin (nestled between Barboncino and Veggies).

Work now being done on this spot. Workers today said it will be a doughnut shop. Looks pretty far along.

I guess donuts are the new cupcakes.

I am SO okay with this. #teamdonut

Relative to bagels, donuts take up far less space, because the customers do not demand you stock 7 different varieties of low fat cream cheese alone.

I would much rather run a donut shop.

    Donuts>bagels
    Donuts>cupcakes

    Yay!

In addition to not needing a 20' refrigerator case to display the cream cheeses, locs and whatnot, donuts can be actually created using less equipment.

It should be interesting to see the differences between who goes here, VS the Dunkin Donuts opening nearby: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/45613/classic-bodega-on-the-sw-corner-of-ep-and-franklin-will-soon-be-replaced-by-a-dunkin-donuts#Item_25

Plus Elsie's parlour and then likely Dough at the Flea again in the Winter.

Kitchen Inspection has recently been requested from DOH, but I was not able to learn the name this new place will operate under.

...I can't say I've looked in on this place recently to see its progress.

Today, I heard that this place is being operated by the place next door, Veggies.

In light of the large mega bagel place being constructed in the former Climax space, I might change my business plan.

    Quickly.

    Why? Bagels aren't donuts.

This place will be big enough that it may sell those 1000 calorie, chocolate chipped infused muffins, as well as pastries.

I would not want to go up against it, even tangentially, if I were Veggies.

Meh- I disagree. I think a place who's concentration is on one thing (donuts) will do just fine up against a bagel joint that's going to throw out some half-assed donuts. Provided Veggie's brings their A game, of course.

Keep in mind, the public has already tried these bagels and they're nothing special. I doubt the donuts will be much better.

Bagel Pub is now open in the former Climax space.

Today I heard that Veggies is no longer going to attempt muffins, donuts or bagels.   It is not clear what the owner's plans are, but he continues to have to pay rent on the space while he figures it out.
