Trees on Nostrand Ave

Is there a way to get more trees on Nostrand Ave? We have quite a few beautiful trees, but there are some stretches of the ave that are in desperate need of some shady greenery. Is this something you go to the Community Board for? Or does each individual merchant have to request a tree?

A few places give away trees, and have various requirements for getting one, but I think these folks are the clearinghouse:

There was a push to plant new trees on Nostrand about 2-3 years ago. Many of them are still young, so don't provide much shade (I'm thinking of the stretch from Prospect down to Pacific). There aren't as many new ones south of Prospect, but the MTA did just come through and plant new trees at all of the SBS stops so Lincoln Place and Herkimer Street now have brand new baby trees as well.

I'm thinking particularly of the stretch from Prospect to St. John's. I just put in a request in the Million Trees. I might even make up little cards or something to give to the merchants, so they can request trees. Is that pushy or helpful? I mentioned to the Tinto guys that they could get a free tree if they asked and they seemed excited about it...

Just remember that on the east side of the street, you'll be unlikely to get trees on the block where the Met is due to truck deliveries (the trees and large trucks don't really co-exist together well). I think everything else is possible on that stretch.

Wish the tree pits had stones filled in if the store owner in front of it won't take care of planting

I used to know a lot of places to get trees on Nostrand. Sorry, couldn't resist.

One of the things you can do is volunteer to take care of the trees we already have. Apparently Million Trees NYC is looking for people to adopt street trees: http://brooklynbased.com/blog/2014/07/08/milliontreesnyc-still-growing-in-brooklyn-with-a-few-snags-along-the-way/
