Is coming to Nostrand...HAHAHAHA!!

I was really hoping for a revamped Chinese food spot, but oh well.

Lovely sign though :D

    768 Nostrand

Very interesting. This may mean that a landlord realizes that some rent is better than no rent.

    Nothing wrong with settling :)

And you know...there's also a market.

Lots of women who live near Nostrand Ave get their nails done REGULARLY. And have a feeling that this place will be a lot shinier and newer than the heavily trafficked nail place on Nostrand bet St. Johns & Lincoln.

Oh goody! I was looking at my nails earlier and I was concerned about my lack of bling on em.

    Yup.

One data point does not make a trend, but that landlord could be perceiving what I am: Some folks are headed to the South, not to the East.

....the landlord might have decided to serve those already on Nostrand, as opposed to those he anticipated would arrive.

The LL can always change their mind when the lease expires.

Disappointing. But maybe if it is shinier and newer, I might actually want to get a pedicure on nostrand.

Another vote of disappointment. Only because we definitely weren't lacking hair/nail salons on this avenue.

Just like we needed another beauty supply store (I'm looking at you, Ooh La La Beauty http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/44440/another-beauty-supply-store-for-nostrand/p1)

Remember, it isn't about what "we" need, it is about what "we" will support.

Means and preferences vary, and they don't always correlate to the parameters we might expect....

I'm sure there is a demand for a cleaner less sketchy looking nail place. I'm just surprised that landlords continue to see the demand for beauty stores and nails places yet don't see the demand for bars and restaurants.

New restaurants and bars watch the trends I am describing very closely.

If they are lucky, they cause a self fulfilling prophesy.

Well, when you cause prophesy to be fulfilled do you think you could bring a noodle shop and a craft beer store to nostrand? And maybe a sports bar and grill?

Over the last 8 years, I have been accused by people opposed to gentrification of being more than a prophet.

They believe I have contributed to (and perhaps even caused) things that are both good and bad: sports bars, crime, displacement, men with handlebar mustaches, higher rents, 20 coffee shops, DJ lessons for Toddlers, Artisan Mayonnaise, harassment of black people by police, soaring property values, 12 mexican places etc.

I tell them "just because I often write things down before others do so, I did not actually cause said things to happen."

I tell them that "just because you do not know something, does not mean it is a secret."

When I walked by the new Bling Bling nails today, it was open! It looks nice, bright, clean. There is a Bling Bling Nails across the street between Sterling and Park -- competition, a 2nd location, or a move?

Landlords rent to people who come with rent and security. Most on Nostrand are not trying to engage in urban planning but in commerce. Trust that they are not turning down successful restauranteurs to rent to untested nail mavens. They are renting to whomever comes with a plan, a budget, and the ability to strike a deal.

Homeowner, you are so right. I wonder if we can recruit more restauranteurs and bar owners...wait, Mike deZayas and Two Saints might kind of do that for us...

And then Mike can declare himself the renaissance king of Nostrand too!

And those that understand economics and macro trends will just shake their heads.

Great! And I was able to confirm that this bling bling nails is a new location for the old bling bling nails on nostrand (between sterling and park) that was just next door to tinto. The old bling bling is now closed. They moved up to a bigger and better space, and people seem pretty happy!
