Greetings readers,

On this thread, I encourage you to plug your favorite non-profit, with the hope that we have a few readers who have some hard earned $ they would like to donate.

I do ask that you not plug a non-profit that you are employed by. With that said, I'd like you donate to Save Our Streets - The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center.

1) You can donate ONLINE by going here: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/1395090?uniqueID=634587548277889205+ and selecting "Crown Heights Community Mediation Center" from the dropdown menu.

2) Donate GOODS through their Amazon Wishlist: http://amzn.com/w/3VP0A1H0JG09Z. These will support thier community holiday party and provide staff with much needed staff supplies.

3) Donate TIME by emailing [email hidden] to learn about volunteer opportunities at the Crown Heights or Bed-Stuy offices.

Thanks

    I love this idea, Whynot!

I'll throw one in that I think does
really great work - St. John's Bread and Life.  They are technically a
religious organization but they don't make recipients of their many
services (soup kitchen, food pantry, sponsor-a-family, hats/gloves/socks
for the homeless) listen to a sermon or be otherwise proselytized.
They served a million meals last year.

    I
see from their website that you can help them out simply by shopping at
Whole Foods on Dec. 16th if that's something you're inclined to do.

    If
you really can't stomach the religious thing but still want to donate
to a charity that combats hunger in our community, Bed-Stuy Campaign
against Hunger is also a great one.

Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC), a fantastic no-kill shelter in Williamsburg that's been in operation since the 80's. Both my dogs are from there. They take such loving care of all their animals--including a hen named Marsha who hangs out with the cats--and are dedicated to finding them good homes.

If you can't donate, you can volunteer to walk dogs, and they always need cleaning supplies, blankets and towels for the enclosures, and other stuff.

Here's a current resident. Look at that face!
