A nameless entity filed for a kitchen inspection at 752 A nostrand, which was formerly the long-shuttered yellow-awninged carribbean take out place beneath Urban Asanas yoga studio. Anyone hear any rumors?

    Located between Park and Sterling.

Said nameless entity appears to be planning to make this space into a Mexican restraurant, Taqueria Milear

Which has led to three things:
    1. I have added this to the quickly growing index thread that lists many of the bars, restaurants and whatnot coming to Nostrand Avenue between EP and Atlantic:

     2. Once this place opens, we will have 14 Mexican restaurants in the rectangle formed by Vanderbilt, EP, Nostrand and Atlantic: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/43891/purity-diner-to-become-l-a-burrito-bar#Item_25

    3. I have googled Urban Asanas and learned it is a yoga place.

We may have 14 Mexican restaurants in the area, but less than half are edible...

Muy deliciouso! Maybe they will price their tacos better than Chika . . . and then we will have 2 Mexican places! Looks to me like Taquerua Milear will be a different style of Mexican food than Chika, which would add some nice variety.

14 seems like a lot, and the ones that enough people don't like will likely go out of business.

I wonder how long before the 2nd and 3rd floors of the addresses to the left of 752 are brought back into use.

754 is the one that is a variety store, and its upper floors are covered in red metal.

756 is a laundry, and its upper floors are covered in yellow metal.

Does anyone know what 754/756 were before they were covered with metal? Just residential, or were they one big space?

Behind the metal likely lies the remains of apartments.

During NYC's bad era (1968 - 1994?) landlords who could not profitably rent their apartments seemed to choose between covering the whole facade in metal, or bricking up the individual windows.

When the metal is removed, it will hopefully be like a little time capsule: Broken avocado colored appliances. Televisions that weigh over 200 lbs and are encased in real wood.

I think one of them was a furniture store back in the day (mid-70's). After googling, I found this online
    https://www.digitalcommonwealth.org/search/commonwealth:xg94ht084

My SO said the other may have been the Buster Brown store. 750 was/is the theater space that remains tied up in the battle over Judge Phillips estate. Everyone thinks of the Slave when they tell the story of the travesty of surrogates court, but few remember that the Judge had a significant number of Nostrand Avenue holding that were also tied up in that scandal.

    @homeowner -
Did you or your SO ever go to 750 back when it was a functioning theater?

I didn't. Too young to have been part of that, although I was in the Slave in the late 80's/ early 90's. The in-laws were part of the BK art/music/performance scene so I'll ask if they ever made it through that place.

I had the pleasure of getting a tour of the theater back in the day. It had amphitheater seating and a stage. It was a wreck of course. Rumor has it that it once was a kresge five and ten.

Omg, I am so excited. I walked past the store last week when there were 20 people crowded in, painting and setting up, looked like a large group of family and friends. Here's to hoping that we are getting an authentic taqueria!

Taqueria milear is super cute, cozy and tasty. I had the taco al pastor, which was nicely seasoned and came in a double soft flour tortilla with radish, no pales (aka cactus) and lettuce, as well as a choice of salsa verde or pico de gallo. Prices on their soft opening menu are around those of chicka Mexicans, but the menu is more extensive: burritos, quesadillas, flautas, tortas, agua frescas (including horchata!!!!) and grandmas mole. A kind young man named Artemio owns the taqueria and it is a family business. I am thrilled and can't wait to eat more!!!! I am so happy that we have an authentic Mexican taqueria on Nostrand! I was transported to sunset park.

Thank you for your report.   One of this place's strengths is that unlike Chika, people can eat in.

Yes tried it out yesterday and it was good! Had a chorizo burrito, veggie nachos and chicken quesadillas. They are still working on the menu. but this is a great addition to the neighborhood.

I wonder if the extensive taco/burrito competition in the neighborhood will eventually drive prices down to California levels.
