In case you wondered if I had stopped posting about shootings in eastern Crown Heights
whynot_31
Nope. There just are not as many shootings as there used to be. As of today, there hasn't been one in NE Crown Heights in 100 days.
The reasons are complex.
The outcome is quite satisfactory.

pheightsresidentThat's great to read! Sadly, the trend will likely break/spike as the weather warms. -
whynot_31Warmer weather often correlates with gun shot wounds.
...but I am optimistic we won't return to the levels of violence we had in - say- 2005. -
ldarippaLet's hope the trend continues. -
newguy88Did why not just jinx us? -
homeownerI think the more correct version of this would be "100 days without anyone being hit by bullets shot in the Crown Heights target area". I was an ear-witness to a failed attempt two weeks ago. It seems our remaining gunmen are just bad shots. -
whynot_31edited April 2015Yes, the stat measures whether people were hit by gunfire within the catchment area (the square formed by Atlantic, Kingston, EP, Utica).
It does not include incidences in which a gun is fired and no human is hit:
-person buys gun and then fires into air to ensure that it works.
-person aims gun at human he does not like, but misses.
-person fires gun in air to see how quickly (and whether) police will come, then walks away giggling.
-person drinks liter of rum, smokes 3 blunts and then fires gun at his own stove for unknown reason.

I don't think the stat is dishonest in anyway.
It just defines "shooting" in the way that EMTs and police officers do, as opposed to how neighbors do.
I also don't believe it attempts to have the reader infer that days without a shooting can be directly attributed to the work of the violence interupters:
http://www.nij.gov/journals/264/pages/ceasefire-interrupters.aspx
While the violence interupters deserve much of the credit, additional factors likely include:
-a very cold winter
-a declining street drug trade
-the phenomena known as gentrification. -
goldemi1siouxsie knew the score of when the heat really gets turned on. 92 degrees.
-
whynot_31hopefully it will be cooler than 92 degrees on May 16th.
