bandanas, scarves, etc as head-coverings

Okay, I feel as if I need my "girl card" taken away from me for this:

Let's say it's a Saturday morning, and my hair looks atrocious. However; I want to dash out to Tom's for breakfast before the line wraps around the block. Sometimes I spot a woman wearing a bandana or other cool piece of fabric tied over her hair. This seems like a great idea to temporarily shield my hair from polite society. However; for the life of me, I cannot find these on sale anywhere!

Can anyone help a woman out, here? Where can I find these handkerchiefs, scarves, etc for sale? Hellllllp! :-s :-k

I usually find very nice scarf at salvation army, thrift store and my mom's closet.
Since my mom is in Japan, I haven't checked her closet recently so I go to salvation army a lot.

    Good luck!

I had a whole pile of beautifully printed cotton ones for sale in my shop this summer, like I always do. But now they're sold out. I may have some silk squares put away, if you're interested in those, let me know and I'll dig a few out for you.

All sorts of modesty-preserving headware can be bought over the net...

That's the sort of thing that Canal Jeans used to be perfect for, but I'm not sure if it's only remaining incarnation over at the Junction would still carry it (they seem to have a lot of space devoted to brass items and crappy furniture).

Have you checked Target? They seem like the kind of place where a bandana could be procured.

You should be able to find scarves at any department store.

bandanas are weirdly hard to come by . . . street vendors have scratchy cheap ones that wear down to softness eventually...but that takes years. Still, it works to schmata yourself . . . on 7th ave there's a lady between Union and Carroll most days.

army navy stores and outdoor gear places have the good ones

I sported the do-rag bandana almost daily when my hair was long and I used to get them at the "random stuff" store next to Video Edge on Flatbush. Yes, they are the lower quality scratchy ones, but I just washed them a couple times and they were fine.

Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg has tons and tons of vintage scarves. The Park Slope location has some, but not as great a selection.
