I bought some food from there recently and it was AWESOME. Is that a fluke? Or is this some sort of hidden treasure here PH?

That's that restaurant next to Key Food on Washington near Lincoln. I grabbed a menu but hadn't tried it yet. Might now!

    Subject: the Islands

Is by far the best west indian take-out in the area. It's more expensive too, but worth it in my opinion!

I got a large jerk chicken with Jasmin rice, which was awesome. It was enough food for me and my girlfriend at $9.

I thought this "undiscovered gem" business was pure hype, but now that I've tried it, I can say it's the best I've had on Washington Ave. (the others I've tried being 3D's Place and Cafe Shane). I paid $16 for a peppery chicken curry with vegetables and plantains, cod-flavored roti (bread), homemade lemonade and a giant piece of rum-soaked bread pudding. This was far too much food for one person, and I ended up taking home nearly the whole bread pudding.

The tiny upstairs dining loft, with its 6-foot ceilings, wood floors and islands decor, has a look that I can only describe as "voodoo treehouse." To get there, you have to climb a metal service ladder, which is a bit frightening--if you don't hit your head on the way up, you might slip and fall on the way down.

I finally had time to swing by, get takeout, and in honor of vegan Isa, I got the veggie curry. While I was waiting, the charming owner gave me some incredible peas and jasmine rice to taste!

This is most definitely the best West Indian food I've ever had, and I've tried it all over the 'hood, even venturing into Crown Heights. Viva The Islands! :D

I was thinking about *why* the food is so good here, and I think it's mostly the spices. They're used/mixed to absolute perfection, and the food is neither undercooked or overcooked. Man, I'm getting hungry talking about it.

Dusting off an old thread because I had a chat with the owners tonight, who informed me they are presently celebrating their

    10 year anniversary.

Consistently yummy food the entire time!
