Have a friend with a landlord that is renovating the next door apartment. Wants to move front doors of both apartments which will take 4 foot from my friends apt. Landlord is making one bedroom into two bedroom.
Permits on front of building only mention apartment being renovated.
Friend is concerned as there is small child with asthma in apartment.

What are their options?

TIA

Lol on a 1-bed's transformation into a 2-bed with just 4 square feet
(Assuming I correctly understand the measurement)

Say yes - get a rent reduction out of it. Asthma?

If the landlord is currently approaching your friend about the idea, I would see what the landlord seeks to offer in return.

Your friend should appear as if they are hugely inconvenienced by this change, know their rights as a Rent Stabilized tenant (?), and plan to stay in the apartment for decades.

He(LL) cant do it on the books. But off the books your friend has negotiating options worth money/ new lease terms.

Is this a regular non-stabilized apt?

Assuming you have a lease, the law entitles you to the "quiet enjoyment" of the apartment. Get a lawyer to ruin your landlord's life.

Why in the world are you saying this? Ruin your LL life just for the sake of ruining it?

The landlord is threatening to steal part of the guy's home. He needs to be tought a lesson. Tenants have rights! (And I'm a landlord, btw)
