Okay- there was a fire on St. Mark's, between Classon and Franklin-- I don't know the exact address-- it's immediately to the right of that newly opened building with all the balconies (if you're facing it). It was on the roof of that building. It happened weeks ago, but I haven't heard what the cause of it was. It was such a damp night, too.

(also, any advice for me-- there's a girl in my building that insists on having hour-long stereo sessions, blasting the same song, over and over and over... it's so loud, and my windows are quite far from hers...)

That's annoying. I used to have a downstairs neighbor who not only played the same awful Coldplay song over and over, but also insisted on singing along.

Have you tried asking her to stop? That's always a good first step.

Ha! As bad as the Coldplay must have been, I think I got you beat. My first apartment in the area, the woman downstairs from me was a real Whitney Houston enthusiast. Well, this being shortly after The Bodyguard came out, I was treated to that GD I-will-always-love-you song over and over again. Not only that, but she was working on it constantly, (unsuccessfully) trying to get the notes just right, etc. See, at the time, I was a bit too unsure of myself and apartment-living etiquette to complain, so I just took it until she got bored and stopped. It was 3 terrible months.

Ahhh....so, yeah just ask her to keep it down. Most people will respond to that. If not, counter-annoy. Sorry, but I don't know about the fire.

Good lord. Yes, you do have me beat.

This girl sounds just like that-- she plays Whitney-ish tunes, sings along, and she's trying to get the notes perfect! Arrrggh!!! She stops the song, rewinds, plays these 8 second segments over and over!

She's been playing a new song today, it sort of sounds like a funky horn song that would come on at the end of a 70s game show, where everyone dances awkwardly as the credits roll... luckily she's not singing along, just clapping...

    over and over and over....

If there's no response to a polite request to stop and it comes to the counter-annoying strategy, may I suggest "Stigmata" by Ministry at the highest volume your stereo can handle? On the other hand, remember that to your other neighbors, you'll be just as bad a nuisance as the original offender.

i have been wondering about that too
and have raised the question with the precinct
    but haven't gotten a response

(i am staying across the street and the smoke was astounding)

i will be at the 77 precinct tonite: http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5368

and will try to get an answer to this (and other questions)

i urge anyone who is wondering (about this or any other incident) to call the precinct as well
it's the only way we are going to get attention
