still new to the area

hi everyone! i moved here in july from clinton hill. im still getting used to the area...its so quiet and i certainly don't get my people watching fix like i used to.

anywhoo, i have ONE long series of questions. :?:

what is up with dude thats in the Q train station every morning, on the bench the moment you swipe at the turnstile...? the black man with the dreads. i say goodmorning to him, he says goodmorning back in his quirky way... i've seen people give him bags, which i'm assuming is food...

how long has he been around? is he there year round? what time does he leave the bench i wonder, since hes never there when i come home form work.

just wondering if anyone knows more about him! and how long hes been around... and what he does with the rest of his day.

also, do any of you guys meet up for coffee, or anything like that? i am always up for meeting new people, and would be nice to have some friends in the neighborhood to get a drink or coffee with sometime.

We have sporadic happy hours every few weeks -- that's a good place to meet people. Here's the thread from the last one. Keep an eye out for the next one.

I always wonder about that guy too. He sits on the bench by the Grand Army Plaza station a lot. He's an extremely nice guy and I know that he listens to the Mets game a lot. I've also seen him in Antonio's getting pizza. So we have at least two common interests.

He definitely has some difficulty walking and I've seen a bunch of people around the neighborhood helping him out.

I don't know why I decided to list all these things about this guy, I guess it's just that I pass him all the time and always wonder what his story is, and it seems like a lot of people know him.

Yesterday I heard him talking with some guy about "There's something about Mary." Three common interests.

good question about the subway guy. maybe it takes somebody who's new here to point out something that has become wallpaper for those who have been here a while.

i have no answers but he does seem to live there parttime, and yes, mornings, but not evenings, which is odd. and as far as i can tell, the cops don't bother him.

I think he might be a threat and that you should call the cops...

i often wonder about that guy as well. has anyone seen him walk? he can barely move, it's like a little shuffle. pretty sad. he does seem to know a lot of people, people are often talking to him at the GAP benches.

I take that back - at least he's funny and occasionally makes a post that's on-topic and well thought out. You...not so much. All but one of your posts are inflammatory. So hating "whitey" has something to do with calling 311? I think I know a few minorities that call 311, or is it only reserved for white people? Maybe there should be a disclosure when you call 311 that states that this service is only reserved for white people, becasue we don't care otherwise.

I wonder about that guy as well. He knows people in the neighborhood. I've seen people stop and talk to him. I took bus 69 from PS to vanderbilt/plaza east once and he got on board, after saying his goodbyes to someone that he obviously just visited. He got off at vanderbilt with me and went and took his stuff and sat on the bench. I am unsure if he is homeless.

In the times I've seen him he isn't visually drunk or high, just clearly has difficulty walking as if in pain or from an old injury. He gives off the vibe that he's a good person though, if I'm any judge of character. He may just have had some rough times in his life and here he is.

once i was carrying this plastic box and the guy in the Q station on the bench yelled out to me, "hey! hey girl! hey girl with the plastic box!" ... but he had nothing else to say to me. i was disappointed, i felt like there was more to be said.

It's funny that I actually trolled this site for awhile just see if anybody knew his whereabouts (his been MIA since about Nov.) but I found my answer today.

I've known him for a few months...his name is Shante and had been out on the streets for 4 years. Mostly, you could find him at the aforementioned locations on Flatbush and plaza street, or at the newsstand by the Q. The last time we spoke back in November, he was working towards getting permanent housing by way of the 5th Avenue committee. Well, turns out that it was arranged. With the cold weather and his bad legs, he's been out of sight for awhile, but he'll be back this summer to hang out. They arranged physical therapy for him as well, so hopefully that will work out for him. Pass this along in case anybody has wondered!

around what time, Jack? I've been looking to say hi these past few days and haven't seen him. Was this as recent as the last few weeks?

On most days I get to the station around 7AM, so around then. And, yes, during the past month I've definitely seen him. He hasn't been at his usual spot on GAP in quite a while, though.

yep. he's back. i take the train around 930 every morning, and he's been back since around christmas i think...

i say goodmorning to him everyday.
