bakery suggestion (but not Sweet Melissa)

I wasn't overly impressed with that new bakery on 7th Ave. I had some treat and it was pretty tasty, but there wasn't a huge selection and it's a bit overpriced. Can anyone suggest a decent bakery where I can order some goodies for Thanksgiving dinner? How is Cousin's? I recall someone on the board suggesting a cake from there.

every bakery in this neighborhood is over priced! Go down to Court Street, the bakeries are cheaper there

I'm a big time fan of the bakeries in Manhattan Chinatown. Cheap, creamy and tons of sugar. Variety as well.

Pastries in this neighborhood leave something to be desired. I know a few private chefs that would be happy to do something for you....let me know if you want to contact them....

Little Red Hen on 8th Ave. near 12th is pretty good. They can be kind of pricy for cakes and pies, but the ones I've gotten have been yummy. I'm also a fan of their muffins--particularly the coconut-cherry ones.

I should clarify....there are no vegan pastries in the neighborhood....and that for me, leaves something to be desired. I'm not vegan, however I don't like "traditional" pastries very much.

    Subject: cocoa bar...?

the cocoa bar on 7th ave and 3rd street has some vegan cakes (chocolate. yum) that they don't advertise as vegan but they are delicious. they also have non-vegan that look pretty good. i'm not sure if you might be able to buy a whole cake there. also probably expensive (isn't everything at this point?) but good.

    good luck.

I tried sweet melissa last week for the first time (the new one on 7th). I had a lemon cheesecake thing, it tasted like it had been out for 3 days. It also had an odd "spoiled milk" taste and I couldn't finish it. and I LOVE lemon and LOVE sweets.
I also bought a truffel, forget which one, but brought it home and had it about an hour later. It was the worst I've ever had, I ate HALF and threw the rest out. I go to a place near my office in SoHo a lot (right around spring and 6th, I forget the name, like Key or Kay or something) and her's are awesome. I prolly won't go back to sweet melissa.
Maybe I'll go there and try a non-dessert item, or maybe I went on a bad day, but it certainly was not as good as cocco room or chocolate room or lounge or bar whatever those places are called.

Thanks all for the bakery suggestions. I think I'll get something from the Junior's place for Thanksgiving. I finally went in there and it looked just like the stuff I was looking for. Nothing too fancy, rich looking, and not too pricey.

I hate when that happens. Especially when those little morsels are 5.95!

100% mayhem with pickups the days before T'day, so order in advance and allow lots of time.
