If you're willing to travel, the new YMCA on Atlantic and Court is 50 a month. It's amazing.

it also has a 150 "initiation fee."

    what a load of crap.

i just want a couple rooms with treadmills and weights and maybe a shower.

    and no initiation fee.

I thought you were being helpful :D and that is a very good deal for only 50 dollars a month! The initiation fee is only paid once and I'm sure it's what helps keep the monthly costs down... I highly doubt you will find anything cheaper than that.

    no offense.

the initiation fee just irks me. :?

is it true that it keeps the monthly cost down? how so?

geez, there must be some neighborhood gym around somewhere. i used to live at 145 and broadway and the little gyms around there are 30 dollars a month, no initiation fee. i am willing to pay 50 a month, but an extra chunk of cash seems extravagant. i just want to lift some weights and use a treadmill!

I got my initiation fee with the Y waved because of my healthcare. They have so many healthcare and other company, union, what have you affiliations that its unlikely you can't get it waved.

It might be worth calling them to see.

I also go to the one in Park Slope.

There is what looks like an el cheapo gym on the west side of Nostrand at Pacific, on the second floor of a building. Though they do advertise "hot yoga", so maybe it's gentricontrified? I dunno, but maybe it's what you're looking for.

OP, are you male or female? I believe I've seen one of those super-cheapo Lucille Roberts places in the Fulton Mall (and probably elsewhere in Bklyn, too), but i think they are for women only. Seems like there have to be other, co-ed cheapo storefront chain places around, though, if you truly don't care how smelly, cramped, etc. your gym is.

I think super cheap gyms are a thing of the past. In this day and age, only the weathy or stronly middle class can afford to stay in shape

Seriously though, someone once, in one of these similar-ish threads, suggested trying to negotiate a gym price. Try it out and let us know if it works!

Also, look for chains (if you don't mind them) to see if they have any new gyms opening, then go there and see if you can get a charter membership by signing up before that gym officially opens. They are usually a good deal less, waive the sign on fee, and you can use any of the locations you want, any time.
