Freed From the Island

According to StreetsBlog, the Department of Transportation has finally fixed the pedestrian signal between the library and the park so that you can cross the whole street in one try, instead of getting trapped on that little traffic island. Amazing how long it takes so many to get so little.

Is this for real? I can't wait to go try it out.

And DH's photo is from after the runaway-car fence barriers went in. Before that, it felt a lot more hairy.

The photo actually comes from the StreetsBlog article, to give credit.

It was incredibly dicey before those barriers. Those new barriers are called bollards, and I'm pretty sure the guy behind StreetsBlog helped compel the city to put them in.

That's an amazing accomplishment. No sarcasm intended. I've dealt with that hazard for over 30 years. Now I can enhance my literacy without running for my life. It's the little things that keep me happy.

But, is it really true? I spent a few minutes on the island this afternoon, and I swear that at that time of day at least the timing was the same as it was before, going both directions. Is the timing-change a not-yet-realized, coming-soon deal?

this island was ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!! people new to the weirdness of it often just assume they'll be able to cross both street. the other day i saw a man with a stroller getting cussed at by a cabbie after a near miss.
    GOOD RIDDANCE

I've crossed another dozen times since I wrote, and I'm pretty sure the timing hasn't changed. Or at least, the time when you can get across in one go isn't even a few seconds longer than it has been for the last couple years--that is, it's still just a few seconds.

I crossed on Halloween, and it was still broken. Yes, I called it broken! *sigh*

From what I've seen, the signal between the library and the island stays red longer than before, but the light between the island and the park does not correspond with it.
So essentially nothing has changed. Big surprise.
