Typical Length before asking landlord for paint job

I've been living in this aprtment since Jan of '04. Can I ask the landlord to repaint the walls or am I responsible for that?

Did they paint it when you moved in? I think if that's the case, its all they're responsible for, but let me go look...

"What are the rules for painting apartments?

The New York City Housing Maintenance Code requires that: In occupied dwelling units in a multiple dwelling, the owner shall:

Paint or cover the walls and ceilings with wallpaper or other acceptable wall covering; and
Repaint or re-cover the walls and ceilings with wallpaper or other acceptable wall covering every three years, and more often when required by contract or other provisions of law. "

So I guess you get a paint job next year.

I did mine myself, as well. I can't stand white walls! Plus, not all landlords have heard of a dropcloth. I've seen really expensive furniture irreparably damaged.

Sometimes if you want a different color, you can get them to do it if you buy the paint color you want (kind of the opposite of the suggestion above- their labor, your paint instead of vice versa).

i thought it was every two years.
