Cats, schmats. What about dogs? Am I the only dog person here?

i like dogs, but poor dogs. cant really keep them in the cities. they need room to run and play. cities aren't really for them. they have to be constantly walked.

i used to have two dogs back on the farm.

if i was ever gonna get a pet again probably a cat .

Anotherdayinbkln, is that gorgeous mutt a shiba inu (edit--nevermind, just saw the other thread)? I've always wanted one but I've heard they're temperamental and hard to break (sort of like huskies--pack dogs, very alpha) and not good for first time dog owners. Sorry to hear about the seizure--purebred animals always have so many health problems. Hope pupster feels better soon.

they say Shiba's are hard to break, but that is because they are very independent in a way. Dog Whisperer says you can't blame breeds tho, any dog can be "broken". they say Shibas aren't the best breed for first time dog owners, but I couldn't have asked for a better dog.

I don't think I can ever have a different breed of dog now. He's the most loyal and lovable guy in the world, very cat-like in the house and saves his energy for the park.

I recommend Shibas highly. they need a lot of training but.. its worth it.

Well, if they're improperly bred, ie lacking genetic diversity, they can have problems.

Exactly. That's why I don't think the statement "purebred animals always...etc" is accurate.

I think the concept of hybrid vigor (also known as heterosis) is pretty well established scientific fact. Obviously there are exceptions- the upper end of the bell curve for purebreeds might be higher than much of the mixed-breed bell curve.

i prefer mutts they are more healthier than any pure breed any day.

Exactly. That's why I don't think the statement "purebred animals always...etc" is accurate.

My purebred cat (an abyssinian) has terrible health problems--it's the inbreeding. If people are breding for profit, not to show, and aren't worried about reputation then they often don't care about health issues. Of course I was tending towards hyperbole (it is the internet, after all--everyone suddenly takes things so literally) and I think it's a valid worry anytime you adopt a purebred animal. Not sure why that small of a statement would get your undies in a bundle--there's certainly no shortage of demand for purebred animals regardless of health problems...
