Rules for Picnics in Prospect Park

Over on D103.com: "There are really two sets of rules for picnics in Prospect Park, the formal rules and the informal rules."

"Formal rules say permits are required for parties of 25 or more, no alcohol is allowed, and tables are first come, first serve."

"The informal rules say permits are only required if you’re a monstrous family reunion or church group, alcohol is fine as long as you pour it into plastic Solo cups, and 'first come first serve' means 'get there by 7 a.m.'"

Yeah, and another rule is no BBQing except in designated areas.

Every year we would throw a party in the Neathermead (off Center Drive) and invite loads of people and serve beer. This year an auxillary cop came by when we were setting up and told us to keep the alcohol in cups. Then the park dept. showed up while. They were cool as well. Even though we were BBQing were we shouldn't they let us continue and just informed us as to the proper method for putting out a BBQ (I thought pouring beer and peeing on it was the way).

The BBQing rule really irked me because all the key BBQing spots are usually all taken at 8AM.

Anyone else have any stories/suggestions/etc. for picnics in the park - especially with alcohol? Which part of the park to target or avoid?

definitely strictly follow the alcohol-in-plastic-cup thing. a good friend of mine got a ticket in the park because she was a bit too slow transfering from bottle to cup. she felt safe because there were five or six large groups around and *everyone* was drinking beer out of bottles, but the cops zeroed in on her.

i don't know where people romanticized the notion of basting your meats in kerosene.

The only story I have worth mentioning is from a couple weeks ago on that beautiful Sunday. We saw yet another feathered chicken with its head cut off by a tree. What is that, Santeria, or what?

Depends - if it was a white chicken then it had it coming for venturing into our 'hood ;)

Well, it was mostly white with a peppering of black feather, so I guess it had a free pass, but that was a very funny thing for you to say. Hah, another hilarious moment from the PH blog!

The even funnier thing is, if everybody on the PH blog were to meet in a conference room to talk about these Black-white issues, there would be a lot of yelling. So, maybe the whole world will work everything out online. Hmm.

i just love it when people still think this country only black and white issues!

I was referring to the things that PH bloggers tend to write about. Sorry to leave you and your people out, but on the PH blog, most of the "race" banter focuses on Black-white topics.

w00t for a successful counter-hijacking. Gentrification to the related (but seperate) favorite of black/white issues.

Just keep your damn brat kids and double wide strollers out of my coffee shop, ok? You're, like, totally messing up the atomosphere.
