Speed chess

Every Friday, from 7pm, at the Tea Lounge @ 837 Union, a few people meet for some friendly games of speed chess (or Lightning or Blitz). They range in strength, and besides, time makes fools of us all.

If you don't know speed chess, it's played with a clock, typically 5 minutes each so no game lasts more than ten minutes. Think chessboxing without the physical violence, or speed dating without the gender balance and romantic overtones.

It's also a great way to build up your aggression for the weekend after a placid week at the office.

Are there any other chess groups in park slope? I'm a relatively new to the area, and not much of a speed-chess fan as i am a chess fan! Should one bring their own board?

Wasn't WhyFi talking about how easily he could "kick doctorj's ass at speed chess" at the last happy hour?

I don't know because I haven't gone looking. According to www.uschess.org there's a club at 288 3rd Av., 11215.

Bobby Fischer grew up and learnt to play in Brooklyn, but that was in a much hipper nearby neighborhood, not Park Slope.

If you'd like to bring a board, clock, and pieces, that's fine. Classic FIDE style for preference. But there's usually fewer than twice as many people as sets. Tables may be in shorter supply.

Oh, that Carnivore - such an instigator! Stealing the glowing tubes of power and everything! Although I once pulled off the four-move check mate (when I was 8 or so), I'm no chess player. Risk, on the other hand...

Never tried it - what's the potential for 8-hour+ marathons? The prospect of an extended conflict isn't as attractive as it once was.

I don't know right now Risk is sounding like a pretty good bet. Me and a couple friends spent a lot of rainy afternoons like this one building our strongholds in Greenland and Irktusk.

It is hard to get 7 people to commit a whole day, but it truly is the ultimate game of strategy and interpersonal skill. It's also possible to play by email / in person / by phone etc., with one turn a week, such that a game lasts a few months but people can fit it in with their schedules.

Illuminati... amusing game, not so serious. Good, but not on my shortlist of favorites.

What about Junta? Or 1830: Railroads and Robber Barons?
