tornado sirens?

do they test tornado sirens once a month around here? Because I've been hearing them on and off for the past half hour (washington and eastern pkwy area).
Weather channel says Severe storm warning, but they wouldn't siren for that right?

Im not sure the proper terminology for it but at sundown in orthodox communities they blast a siren letting them know that shabbos (sp?) is approaching or starting. When I lived in Boro Park I would hear it every Friday and I think they may even sound it on Saturday at sundown.
