Not sure if this topic has already been addressed, but I am looking for a good/cheap & nearby place to rent a car for a weekend day trip.

I have rented from a number of places including Enterprise on 4th Ave and 9th Street, another chain that is near the KFC on 4th Ave and Adir on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights and Adir was by far the best and the cheapest. Each of these places usually runs out of cars for the weekend so make a reservation and you will be required to rent for the entire weekend (Friday to Monday). Also, the guys who run Adir are Orthodox so you will need to pick up on Friday before sundown.

    Good luck.

This just in from the mad mad world of car rentals . . .
Enterprise has a new policy on 2nd drivers. They'll only accept SPOUSES WITH THE SAME NAME!!! So . . . your friend, roommate, lesbian/gay lover, or lawful wife who doesn't have her husband's name on the driver's license won't be accepted as a second driver.

    My future is with Zipcar.

There's a car rental place on Union and 7th, next to the parking garage near the co-op. Can't vouch for it though.

Speedy's in the one on Union And 7th Ave - usually good for local rentals - they're all booked up.
(We've been checking in there all week...the guy is nice.)

me too- i just applied online... should have my card in a 4-5 days. i'll be sure to drop some comments on this thread (or better yet, the Zipcar thread) when i have some practical experience with 'em, but i'm very hopeful- i'm really looking forward to going on a furniture run to fill out the corners of the new home!

well! i've been approved for the zipcar account! i guess that they didn't dig up too much dirt on me!

if i would have known that the process would only take a few hours, i would have chosen to pick up my card (they have an office on 24th in manhattan) but i had them mail it out to me instead... which means no car this weekend- damn!

While not technically in Prospect Heights, I highly recommend Image Rent-A-Car on Empire Boulevard and Nostrand. They're really nice there and, best of all, only a couple blocks away from the Sterling stop on the 2 train.

GoldieWood, I concur with your assessment of image rent a car, and was just about to post about it when I saw that you had!

Thanks for recommending-- we got a car there last weekend and they were great.

Also, I just joined ZipCar.... I am hoping to be able to use one on Saturday... do you think they will be all booked already?

If you're going to Ikea, rent a U-Haul van for the day. Even with gas, miles, and insurance, it's cheaper than delivery. No way your bookcase is going to fit in a Prius, or even a towncar. There's one by the Altantic Yards, and another on 4th Ave and 2nd St (or so) in Park Slope.

Dissenting opinion: we once had a HORRIBLE experience with the 4th Ave. Uhaul place. We'd come with a load of stuff from PA and arranged a drop off there. They pretended not to know about it and told us some cockamamie story about not having room in the lot, were arbitrarily closing early so we couldn't contact the PA Uhaul place about it to try to straighten things out, and then they told my husband to come back and drop it off the next day or else we'd get charged loads more. He had to drive all over looking for a place to park the thing (the night before street cleaning) and take the day off work the next day to return it at their appointed time. Neither of the two Uhaul outlets involved, nor the national people, showed any concern or remorse about this. I'd never use Uhaul again, but I especially wouldn't go to the 4th Ave. place.

Also note the anecdote I posted on the previous UHaul thread from overheardintheoffice.com where UHaul workers were overheard saying that making reservations is a waste of time (implying that the "reservations" they "take" are in fact meaningless.)

Just got my Zipcar card, having been finally driven to it by Enterprise...you'll probably get yours 2 days after the approval email.

Forget about Uhaul - Zipcar has some stationwagons, and those weird boxy Ikea-stuffing Scions, and even (gasp) SUVs . . . although most of the Minis and Volvos appear to be based in Manhattan ('')

The bookings for this weekend look pretty filled up tho . . .

I'm an idiot... an idiot that has recently moved- I just realized that I gave the good people at Zipcar a hybrid of my previous and new addresses. I placed a call to correct the mistake... *sigh* 2 more days of waiting.
