store front at 806 Washington Ave. btwn Sterling St. J
alafairnadia
This store front used to be a tiny restaurant called Soul Food, and then was almost Papo's deli (but they had water damage before they opened). Now someone is putting something in there. I saw a guy spray painting some white stools silver, and the walls look like they have shelving going in. Liquor store?
anybody have the scoop on this?

exactly. imagine my surprise as I arrived in front of my building, 4 glasses of sancerre to the wind (I'm a lush), and saw brand new gates and no big PAPO'S awning. thankfully, my across the hall neighbor clued me in. I left this morning with the ghetto gates, and came home drunk to shiny, pretty gates. ack. where are the balloons?! -
rhodaminea party store? geez.
i saw the dudes wrestling with some lumber last night, and banging on their pull-down late into the evening, heh.
i guess i finally have to give up hope that soul food witll magically reappear, huh? that was my fav place to eat in all of PH.

soul food is long gone. and I think the people in my building are happy about not having food-fumes, too, so it's definitely not reappearing in that building. have you tried the islands yet? or the jamaican patty joint across the street? or that ginger place near st. marks?

soul food was bad for my waistline, for sure. I thought it was totally acceptable to eat curry goat or jerk chicken w/ fixins from there every night. oops. -

heh! me too. between sine and i, i think we ate our combined weight in mac&cheez, peas and rice, veggie roti and their mindblowingly delicious collards.
plus, we were attached cause that was the first place we ever ate in teh hood, moments after the moving van dumped us into our place, back in the day. -

word. so I guess I'm glad it's gone because I'm forced to cross the street and walk a few blocks for the Islands. that makes it totally acceptable to eat it every night. all that extra exercise is paying off. -

heh, especially with those staris you have to brave each time! -

who needs booze? i say, just hold your breath and sprint up the stairs. kaboom! BLOTTO in no time!
i tried the veggie roti at the islands... at $8 a pop, ireally wasnt impressed, especially as it had pieces of what appeared to be a plastic serving glove in it. eww. from what folks tell me, though, it deserves a second chance... -

I haven't been there in awhile -- I come home via the B/Q -- but I've only ever gotten really great meals there. -

Really? You know, it was real convenient for me, because it was right downstairs, but I much preferred the Islands.

Yeah, the lady was nice, but there was something about her that I couldn't pin down, but I always felt sorry for her for some reason. maybe something in her eyes or her posture. She must have worked pretty hard. Not really sure why I would feel that way, but every time I went there, I'd leave thinking "poor woman". I think she just always looked like she was struggling to stay on top. Maybe that's not the case, but that's what I'd always think. -
carnivoreI've got to disagree about the goat. The Islands has the best goat curry I've had anywhere. And I work near Church avenue, and eat Carribean food all the time. It's served on the bone (as it should be, for maximal flavor), so I can see how someone who's a little squeamish might have a problem with that, but it's absolutely delicious. -

I think the reference was to the goat at the soul food place at 806 Wash. that's no longer around. -

The calypso shrimp and curry shrimp are also excellent there, btw. But that means you have to eat there (not that there's anything wrong with that). -
